POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men’s lacrosse team found itself in an early hole, but the Cardinals rallied for five straight goals and ended up on the winning end of a 14-9 decision at Potsdam Wednesday.
Potsdam (5-6, 1-3 SUNYAC) raced out to a 3-0 lead over the first 2:56. Sophomore midfielder Jared Flath won the opening faceoff, sprinted down the field and scored eight seconds into the contest. Just 47 seconds later, Flath set up senior Ryan Paparella. Flath then assisted as senior attackman Pete Pike
made it 3-0 at 12:04.
After the Bears’ third goal, Plattsburgh (9-5, 3-1 SUNYAC) called a timeout to regain its composure. The Cardinals responded accordingly, erasing the Potsdam lead with five straight goals to close the quarter, including two from Tim Lawrence.
Potsdam’s Rob Kunz opened the second quarter with an unassisted goal to cut the Plattsburgh lead to 5-4, but the Cardinals netted four more to make it 9-4. The Bears added a goal by Pat Morrill late in the quarter, ending the half with Plattsburgh up by four.
Plattsburgh’s Joey Kramer scored the only goal of the third quarter before scoring two man-up goals in the fourth. Kramer finished the day with five goals, three assists and eight groundballs to lead the Cardinal offense.
Lawrence netted four goals and added an assist for the Cardinals. Junior midfielder Brett McClelland also scored a pair of goals for Plattsburgh. Mike Santisteban was 14-for-26 at the X, scooped up eight groundballs and contributed two points.
Flath was the offensive standout for the Bears, tallying two goals and five assists. Flath won five faceoffs and picked up four groundballs. Rob Kunz added three goals and an assist for Potsdam.
Gordie Gehring made seven saves in the Plattsburgh goal to improve to 9-5 on the year. Potsdam’s Mike Quinlan made 13 stops in the loss.
Plattsburgh outshot the Bears, 43-26, and collected 37 ground balls to Potsdam’s 30.
The Cardinals, who are second in the SUNYAC standings, return home Saturday to host Brockport. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at the Field House Lacrosse Complex.
