Cardinal Lacrosse Holds On for 10-8 Win at Farmingdale State

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. - The Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team (2-0) defeated Farmingdale State (0-2), 10-8, in a non-conference game Sunday. The Cardinals outshot the Rams 54-24, but saw their offense silenced in the second half as all 10 Plattsburgh goals came in the first 30 minutes of play.

With just 1:35 gone in the game, Farmingdale junior midfielder Bobby Thomas opened the scoring off an assist from Tim Caden to give the Rams a 1-0 lead. Thirty-nine seconds later, sophomore midfielder Nick Travers evened the score with an unassisted goal.

Senior midfielder Rob Nosworthy connected for the Rams second goal, giving them a 2-1 lead with 11:28 remaining in the first quarter. Freshman attack Brendan Damm would tie it up again, 2-2, at the 9:09 mark. Farmingdale's Bill McGarvey scored at 6:24, assisted by Nosworthy, but Plattsburgh would score four unanswered goals to hold a 6-3 advantage after the first period.

In the second, Farmingdale scored twice within the first five minutes to put the Rams to within one. But Plattsburgh responded with three straight goals, one from Brett McClelland and two from Joey Kramer, to take a 9-5 lead. The two teams swapped goals in the final five minutes of the first half to make it 10-6 at the midway point.

The Cardinal offense was led by Kramer with three goals and an assist. Freshman long stick middie Nick Parrella had a game-high 10 caused turnovers and picked up nine ground balls. Travers posted a game-high 11 ground balls, along with two goals, two caused turnovers and won 7-of-12 faceoffs.

For Farmingdale, Caden and Thomas led the scoring with three points each. Joe Ciaravino finished with five ground balls and five caused turnovers. Sophomore Al Rocco led the team with six ground balls and won 7-of-11 faceoffs.

Gordie Gehring made six saves to earn his second win for Plattsburgh. Farmingdale goaltender Patrick Delventhal record 18 saves in the loss.

Plattsburgh returns to action Saturday in a non-conference game against Manhattanville. The game will be played at Division Avenue High School in Levittown, N.Y. at 7 p.m.
