CORTLAND, N.Y. - Nationally-ranked No. 2 Cortland tallied ten goals in the first half to hand the Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team a 14-3 loss in its State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) opener Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals drop to 6-4 on the year and 0-1 in conference play, while Cortland improves to 8-0 overall and 1-0 in the SUNYAC.

The Red Dragons scored three goals in the first quarter and seven in the second to hold a commanding 10-1 at the half. Plattsburgh was finally able to get on the board at the 7:19 mark of the second quarter when Anthony Pafundi picked up his seventh of the year from James Read.

Tommy Kilderry and Nick Travers netted one goal apiece for Plattsburgh with Brett McClelland and James Read each adding an assist. Junior goalie Gordie Gehring registered eight saves in 58:43 before giving way to freshman Chris Guzzetta, who did not face a shot on goal in the final 1:17. Mike Santisteban won 7-of-14 faceoffs and scooped up five ground balls. Gehring recorded six ground balls and McClelland had four.

Greg Wright led Cortland with two goals and two assists while Cody Consul and Matt Rakoczv contributed two goals apiece. Matt Kaminski earned the win after making eight saves through the first 35:24. Steve Mahle saw his first action as a Red Dragon, making three saves and allowing one goal in 18:04 and sophomore Scott Tota did not register a stop over the final 6:32.

After playing nine of their first 10 away from home, the road-weary Cardinals return to the Field House Complex for three straight games. Plattsburgh will look to snap its two-game skid Wednesday when St. Lawrence comes to town for a non-conference game at 7 p.m.
