POTSDAM, N.Y. - Gordie Gehring gave the Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team a strong effort in goal but it wasn't enough as penalties hurt the Cardinals in 10-7 loss at Clarkson in a non-conference game Wednesday.
Gehring made 15 saves on 25 shots in the loss for Plattsburgh.
Clarkson (5-2) scored two man-up goals 11 seconds apart to take an early 2-0 lead. Tommy Kilderry put Plattsburgh (6-3) on the board with an unassisted goal at the 6:52 mark of the first quarter but the Golden Knights answered back with two more goals to take a 4-1 lead into the final seconds of the quarter. Mike Lind made it a two-goal game with a quick goal of the faceoff with one second left in the first quarter.
Tom Monahan cut the Clarkson lead to 4-3 with an unassisted effort at 3:56 of the second quarter but two late goals by Clarkson made it 6-3 at the half.
Anthony Pafundi scored his first of two on the night at 13:03 of the third but Clarkson tacked on two more to put Plattsburgh down 8-4.
The Cardinals clawed back into the game with Kilderry's second of the night and a goal from Charlie Dullea to bring Plattsburgh back within two but another late-quarter goal by the Golden Knights caused momentum to swing in the opponent's favor.
Pafundi netted his second of the game with 5:39 left in the fourth quarter before the Cardinals were unable to capitalize on three extra-man opportunities at the end of the game, securing the win for the Golden Knights.
Clarkson outshot Plattsburgh, 41-28. The Golden Knights were 2-for-9 on extra-man opportunities, while the Cardinals continue to struggle with a man-up, going 0-for-5.
Nick Travers led the Cardinals with four groundballs and Nick Parella finished the night with three caused turnovers.
Matt McCabe and Kyle Kasprzyk each contributed three points for Clarkson. Matt Davidson led the Golden Knights with four groundballs and two caused turnovers. Goalie Ryan Cole recorded eight stops in the victory.
The Cardinals open their State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) schedule on the road Saturday at nationally-ranked No. 2 SUNY Cortland. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
