Lacrosse Uses Hot First Quarter to Down Mustangs

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State lacrosse team (6-2) scored six goals in the first quarter to roll to a 10-4 road victory over Morrisville State (2-0) in non-conference action Saturday.

James Read started things off for the Cardinals with a goal after just 1:12, but the Mustangs hit back exactly one minute later to tie the score at one. Plattsburgh then scored five unanswered goals through Tim Lawrence, Mike Sapone, Brett McClelland, Read and Lawrence again to make the score 6-1 with one minute remaining in the quarter. Lawrence’s first goal and McClelland’s goal both came on man up opportunities after the Mustangs had been whistled for penalties. With 38 seconds left in the quarter, Dean Priest struck for the Mustangs to cut the deficit to four.

The second was a much quieter affair as the Cardinals struck just once with 3:03 remaining on the clock. A Mustang player was whistled for two penalties and Nick Travers took advantage of the man up opportunity by scoring off a feed from Lawrence to make it a 7-2 game.Travers again found the back of the net in the third quarter as he scored an unassisted goal with one minute to go in the quarter.

Lawrence and Read used the fourth quarter to register their hat trick goals. Lawrence opened the fourth quarter scoring, before Read completed his triple after a Morrisville player was called for pushing. The Mustangs grabbed two late goals through Jeremy Beresovoy and David Middlemore to make it a 10-4 final.

Travers led the Cardinals with six points after racking up four assists to go along with his two scores. Read, Lawrence, and Tommy Kilderry added assists of their own.

The Mustangs endured a hard time staying out of penalty trouble, amassing over 14 penalty minutes throughout the game. Michael Hinchey recorded the loss for Morrisville after making 17 saves.

Gordie Gehring made six saves in 57:11 for the Cardinals, while Chris Guzzetta made one save in 2:49.

The Cardinals return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Clarkson for a 4 p.m. game.
