PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Tim Lawrence and Nick Travers scored three goals apiece as the Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team rolled to a 14-3 win over Norwich University in its home opener at the Field House Lacrosse Complex Wednesday.
Plattsburgh (5-2) dominated play much of the game, outshooting the Cadets 56-18. The Cardinals won 13 faceoffs and picked up 40 groundballs while Norwich (1-3) took eight draws and scooped up 24 groundballs. Plattsburgh also completed 28 of 34 clear attempts.
Both teams struggled on extra-man opportunities as the Cardinals were 0-for-5 and the Cadets went 0-for-6.
Plattsburgh was up by four goals after the first quarter and held a 6-0 lead at the half. Norwich finally ended the Plattsburgh's nine-goal run at the 6:12 mark of the third quarter when leading scorer Patrick Tommins netted his seventh of the season from Seth Fuller.
Ian Mendoza and Ian Thomas added goals in the fourth to round out the scoring for the Cadets.
Ryan Hastings led the Cardinals with two goals and two assists. James Read and Brett McClelland each scored twice while Joey Kramer contributed a goal and assist. Kramer leads the Cardinal offense with 21 points.
Andrew Tralongo scored his first collegiate goal for the Cardinals and Mike Sapone registered his first collegiate point with an assist on Plattsburgh's eighth goal of the night.
Travers led the Cardinals with five groundballs while Ryan Phillips finished the night with seven caused turnovers. Norwich's Andrew Dustin scooped up six groundballs and Nick Fortezzo earned five faceoff wins.
Gordie Gehring earns the win after making four saves and allowing two goals for the Cardinals. Chris Guzzeta stepped in the Plattsburgh net for the final 11:37 to make two stops. Nathan Proctor and Austin Coleman split time in the Norwich net, each allowing seven goals. Coleman suffered the loss.
Plattsburgh returns to action Saturday at Morrisville. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
