Box Score

STAMFORD, Conn. – Trailing by a goal in the third period, the Plattsburgh State women’s hockey team put up a three-spot in the final stanza to earn a 3-1 win against Manhattanville College in a non-conference game at Terry Conners Rink.

The game got off to a slow start as Plattsburgh held a 4-3 edge in shots on goal after a scoreless first period. The Valiants (6-3-1) took the lead early in the second period when Sonia Occhionero scored a power-play goal at the 5:57 mark. Alyssa Taylor and Erin Sidjak added assists to put Manhattanville up 1-0.

The Cardinals outshot the Valiants, 11-7, in the second period but still had nothing to show for it. Top-ranked Plattsburgh was finally able to break through at 4:56 of the third on an unassisted goal by Alyssa Parke. Morgan MacInnis added the game-winner at 10:28 from Shannon Stewart and Caitlin Gilligan for her third of the year.

Chelsea VanGlahn added a short-handed goal later in the period to give the Cardinals some breathing room.

Plattsburgh finished with 26 shots on goal while Manhattanville had 15. The Cardinals went 1-for-4 on the power play while the Valiants were 1-for-6.

Cardinal goaltender Sydney Aveson made 14 stops in her seventh win. Manhattanville’s Mary Evans finished the night with 23 saves.

With the win, the top-ranked Cardinals wrap up a near-perfect semester with a 10-0-1 record.  The one tie of the first half came early in the season against the Norwich Cadets – a 2-2 final at the Norwich East/West Hockey Classic. Plattsburgh will have its chance to avenge the tie as the Cadets will make the trip to the Stafford Ice Arena on Sunday, Jan. 6 to open the second semester. The non-conference matchup is set for 4 p.m.
