NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Teal Gove tallied the game-winning goal with 2:31 gone in overtime, lifting the Plattsburgh State women’s hockey team (1-0-0) to a 2-1 win against Manhattanville on Saturday in the second game of the East/West Classic hosted by Norwich University.
The two teams remained scoreless until the 10:31 mark of the second period when Plattsburgh’s Jenny Kistner scored her first of the season from Emma Rutherford to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.
Penalties plagued the Cardinals after taking the lead as Plattsburgh took two penalties in the second period and two in the third. With 19 seconds remaining in regulation, Plattsburgh’s Allison Era was whistled for elbowing to give Manhattanville a late power-play. The Valiants (0-1-0) seized the opportunity to play spoiler as Katie Little found the back of the net at 19:48 to tie the game at 1-1. Lynsey Schill and Mary Rose Morrison picked up assists on the Manhattanville goal which would send the game to overtime.
The Valiants picked up a checking penalty with 1:31 gone in overtime, giving Plattsburgh the chance to retaliate. Shannon Stewart and Kistner set up Gove for her first of the year, giving Plattsburgh the dramatic win.
Plattsburgh’s Sydney Aveson made 14 saves to earn the win. Mary Evans suffered the loss for Manhattanville, turning away 24 shots.
The Cardinals went 1-for-3 on the power-play, while the Valiants finished the day 1-for-4. Plattsburgh held a 26-15 advantage in shots on goal in the season opener.
Plattsburgh was the only team in the tournament to earn a victory on Saturday as Norwich and Elmira played to a 2-2 tie in the first game. The East/West Hockey Classic wraps up tomorrow afternoon with Manhattanville facing Elmira at 1 p.m. before the highly anticipated showdown between No. 1-ranked Norwich and No. 2-ranked Plattsburgh at 4 p.m.
