PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.  – Friday’s contest between Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) West rivals Plattsburgh and R.I.T. proved to be like most of the meetings between the two teams in recent years as the No. 8 Cardinals battled the top-ranked Tigers to a 1-1 tie at the Stafford Ice Arena.

Three of the last four meetings between the two teams have ended in a draw. Last season the Cardinals left Rochester with two wins before falling in the ECAC West Championship game, 2-1, to the Tigers. With tonight’s tie, Plattsburgh is the first team to take a point from R.I.T. this season.

R.I.T. (14-0-1, 8-0-1 ECAC West) struck first as Kristina Moss fired a shot from the point that was deflected off a Plattsburgh player to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead with 12:38 remaining in the first period. Kourtney Kunichika was credited with an assist on Moss’ second of the year.

A little over a minute later, Plattsburgh (9-3-2, 7-0-2 ECAC West) answered back as Teal Gove slide the puck through the five-hole off a breakaway. Erika Shaubel picked up an assist on the game-tying goal.

Both teams had numerous scoring opportunities throughout the night. Chelsea VanGlahn was unable to take advantage of a breakaway early in the first, firing her shot over Tigers’ goaltender Laura Chamberlain. With the Tigers on the power-play and 5:00 to play in the second, an R.I.T. player struck the post but could not find the back of the net.

Neither side could cash it in on the power-play as each team went 0-for-4. The Cardinals finished the night with a slight 25-21 edge in shots on goal despite a 7-4 Tigers’ advantage in the third.

Chamberlain recorded 24 saves in the tie. Plattsburgh goaltender Sydney Aveson turned away 20 shots.

Plattsburgh and R.I.T. return to the ice tomorrow at 3 p.m. to wrap up the two-game series.
