ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men’s lacrosse team snapped its three-game losing streak by hanging on for a 16-15 victory at Oneonta State in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game earlier today.
The Cardinals improve to 10-5 overall and 3-2 in the conference. The Red Dragons fall to 3-10 on the year and 1-4 against SUNYAC opponents.
Plattsburgh held a commanding 6-0 lead after the first quarter, but Oneonta tallied seven goals in the second to cut the lead to 11-7 at the half.
The Red Dragons kept battling in the second half, outscoring the Cardinals 8-5 over the final 30 minutes, but Plattsburgh held on for a much-needed win.
Brett McClelland tallied three goals and added an assist for Plattsburgh. Kyle Norchi added four more points with two goals and two assists. Nick Travers also contributed three goals for the Cardinals.
Joey Kramer, Pete Morgan and Tommy Kilderry scored two goals apiece. Sean Jaquin and Charlie Dullea each also netted goals to round out the scoring for the Cardinals.
Tyler Jennings had a career day for the Red Dragons, scoring six goals. Mike Salerno added four of his own and John DeOrdio tallied three goals.
Oneonta held the edge over Plattsburgh in statistical categories: 65-44 in shots, 52-45 in groundballs and 27-8 in face-off wins. The Red Dragons also went 1-for-7 on man-up opportunities.
Chris Miles suffered the loss in net for the Red Dragons, making 10 stops. Danny Caufield improved to 10-5 for Plattsburgh, recording 18 saves.
Following today’s games, Plattsburgh is currently tied for third-place in the conference standings with SUNY Geneseo. The Cardinals will wrap up the regular-season with a SUNYAC showdown against conference leader SUNY Cortland on Saturday afternoon. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at the Field House Lacrosse Complex.
