PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.
– Ray Ryan beat Danny Caufield with 5.4 seconds left in the game to give the Geneseo Blue Knights a hard-fought 10-9 win over the Plattsburgh State Cardinals in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) men’s lacrosse action on a cold and windy afternoon at the Field House Lacrosse Complex.

The Cardinals fall to 9-5 overall and 2-2 in conference play.  The Blue Knights improve to 6-5 on the year and 3-1 in the SUNYAC.  Plattsburgh now sits in fourth place in the conference standings with two games left to play – both against SUNYAC opponents.

Plattsburgh had a 6-4 lead at the end of the first quarter, powered by two goals from Nick Travers.  Pete Morgan, Kyle Norchi, Joey Kramer and Tommy Kilderry each also found the back of the net in the first 15 minutes.

Geneseo rallied for three unanswered goals in the second and held the Cardinals scoreless to take a 7-6 lead into halftime.

Norchi tallied the only goal of the third quarter, scoring an unassisted goal at the 4:51 mark to tie the game at 7-7.

The two teams exchanged goals throughout the final quarter of play.  With the Cardinals trailing 9-8 with less than a minute to play, Norchi tied the game again with an unassisted effort for his 47th of the season.

The back-and-forth battle appeared destined for overtime until Ryan rolled the ball past Caufield, handing the Cardinals a heartbreaking loss in the final seconds.

Plattsburgh held a 41-30 advantage in shots, while Geneseo has an edge in groundballs (33-28) and faceoff wins (13-of-22).  The Cardinals were 1-for-4 on man-up chances, while Geneseo went 1-for 5.

Caufield recorded seven saves in the loss.  Freshman goalie Ryan Zaremba proved to be a game-changer, recording 16 saves in his fifth win of the season.

The Cardinals will look to snap their three-game skid on Wednesday, April 27th in a conference contest at Oneonta State.  Game time is set for 4 p.m.
