PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.--Plattsburgh State women's hockey coach Kevin Houle announced on Tuesday that soon-to-be seniors Steph Moon and Megan DiJulio will serve as team co-captains for the 2010-11 season, plus Helen Giroux will be designated assistant captain.
In addition, the winningest active coach in NCAA hockey today also unveiled the team awards from this past campaign.
Stephanie Moberg, a senior from Saratoga Springs, N.Y. (Northwood School), is the most valuable player after winning AHCA All-America First Team and Eastern College Athletic Conference West Division Player of the Year accolades. The left winger led the Cardinals with career highs of 25 goals and 43 points, and was also named last week the Plattsburgh Female Athlete of the Year.
The Unsung Hero Award goes to senior right wing Laurie Bowler of Brantford, Ontario (Assumption Secondary School). After a slow start, Bowler ended up with 14 goals and 28 assists for fourth in team scoring. She also tied the NCAA Division III career record for power play goals with 29. The 2007 conference rookie of the year was chosen All-ECAC West Honorable Mention this year.
Freshman right wing Shannon Flattery (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill High School) is the most improved player after contributing two goals and an assist for three points in 18 games.
Rookie of the Year Teal Gove, a freshman center out of Berwick, Ontario (Ontario Hockey Academy), led Cardinal first-year players with 10 goals and 19 points in 28 games. She ranked seventh overall in team scoring and made the All-ECAC West Rookie Team.
Danielle Roberts earned the Scholar-Athlete Award after winning the Winter Chancellor's Scholar-Athlete Award in March from the State University of New York Athletic Conference for having the highest grade-point average among the league's women's hockey student-athletes. The sophomore defenseman out of St. Albans, Vt. (Bellows Falls Academy), has compiled a 3.60 overall GPA as a business major, recording an assist in 19 contests.
Moon is a center forward Allison Park, Pa., who posted career highs of eight goals, 27 assists and 35 points. She will be the Cardinals top-returning scorer next season. Right-winger DiJulio (Slave Lake, Alberta/Warner Warriors Hockey School) netted career bests of 23 goals, 11 assists and 34 points en route to second-team all-league honors as a junior. Giroux (Chazy HS) also enjoyed a career year while contributing six goals and eight points from her right wing position.
