CORTLAND, N.Y. - Its waited nearly a month to finish what it began, but the Plattsburgh State softball team (22-14, 11-7 SUNYAC) came out with bats swinging and picked up a victory in its final game of the regular season against Potsdam (8-22, 3-13 SUNYAC), 4-3.
The second game of a State University of New York Athletic Conference doubleheader began way back on April 2, but was halted in the top of the sixth inning due to darkness. Cortland kindly hosted the finale of the contest for the two teams, who were both on the road this weekend.
The teams finished deadlocked in a 3-3 tie after the fifth inning, but Plattsburgh finally emerged victorious when it plated the defining run in the bottom of the sixth.
Amy Woo reached first on a throwing error by Potsdam's second baseman and then advanced to second on a single to left by
Nicole Diemer. After
Danielle Gjergji walked to make the bases loaded with one out on the board, Woo was able to sneak across the plate when Potsdam's Brittany Pawlowski tossed a wild pitch at the backstop.
The run, though unearned, would be all the Cardinals would need for the win, as
Ashley Marshall (16-5) sat down the next three batters in the top of the seventh for Plattsburgh.
Marshall struck out eight, walked one, gave up seven hits and allowed three earned runs during the contest.
Diemer,
Ashley Napear and
Erin Florkiewicz led the Cardinals with two hits apiece.
