Cardinals Prove Mettle in Loss to Perennial NCAA Power Saints

Plattsburgh Can't Hold on to First Quarter Lead

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Plattsburgh State gave perennial national power Saint Lawrence all it could handle on Wednesday night at the Field House Men's Lacrosse Complex, but a string of eight unanswered goals by the Saints spelled a 12-8 non-conference loss for the host Cardinals. SLU improves to 4-3 while the Cardinals see their five-game win streak snapped and they fall to 8-2.

The Saints' Caldwell Rohrback led all scorers with four points, including three goals. Matt Pope was one of nine other SLU players who scored a goal and he also had two assists.

Pete Morgan and Luke Weidlein paced Plattsburgh with two goals each. Kyle Norchi and Ryan Price both added a goal and two assists. In addition, Price scooped up a game-high 14 ground balls and went 17-6 on face-offs.

The Cardinals jumped out to a 5-1 lead over the first 17 minutes and 56 seconds and still went into the halftime locker room ahead 6-5.

However, the Saints began to make their move at the 8:18 mark of the second period when Dave Schoettler scored an unassisted goal with his team a man-up. That sparked an eight-goal run to turn a 5-1 deficit into a 10-6 lead.

After another SLU goal to begin the fourth quarter to make it 11-6, Weidlein and Nick DeSantis scored goals less than a minute apart to close within three at 11:29 left in the game.

But the Cardinals couldn't get closer than that because the Saints went into a stall offense, evidenced by a 3:21 time of possession to end the game after two failed Plattsburgh clearing attempts.

Jeff Goeke played the second half in the SLU goal and earned the win by making nine saves while surrendering just two goals. Logan Carpenter posted 13 saves for the Cardinals.

Plattsburgh held advantages in both shots (41-37) and ground balls (33-23), but was outscored in the second half by a 7-2 count.
