Plattsburgh Loses Twice at Cortland in SUNYAC Showdown

Pat Shaughnessy rips 4 hits in doubleheader

Pat Shaughnessy went 4-for-8 with two sacrifices on the day
CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Pat Shaughnessy went 4-for-8 with three runs batted in on the afternoon, but it wasn't enough as Plattsburgh State lost both ends of a conference doubleheader at Cortland, 9-8 in 10 innings and 10-4, in a battle of nationally ranked teams on Saturday af Wallace Field.

The Red Dragons (No. 11 D3baseball.com/No. 13 ABCA) improve to 27-7 overall, including 11-1 in the State University of New York Athletic Conference, and wrap up the No. 1 seed in the upcoming conference tournament next month. The Cardinals, who are ranked No. 23 in the American Baseball Coaches' Association Top 30 poll, fall to 26-8 and 5-5.

In the first game, Plattsburgh had leads of 2-0, 4-1 and 7-4 but the Red Dragons kept coming back. Still, the Cardinals continued to outplay their counterparts for most of the game and went ahead 8-7 in the top of the eighth inning when Josh Colligan stole third and then scored on a throwing error by the catcher.

But Cortland tied it on a fielder's choice with two outs in the ninth, forcing extra innings. Steve Nickel won it in the 10th with a two-out RBI-single through the left side, scoring Andy Gardner from second base.

Shaughnessy had two doubles and drove in three runs. Anthony Presto, Donny Coolidge  and Andrew Baio  also had two hits apiece for the Cardinals. Coolidge also had a pair of RBIs.

In the second game,  Tory Bouyea and Shaughnessy had two hits each and Coolidge contributed two RBI.

Cortland outhit Plattsburgh 14-7 as part of a 31 to 19 margin on the day.

Leading 3-1 after three, the Red Dragons added three insurance runs in the fifth and iced it with four more in the sixth.
