POTSDAM, N.Y. - Luke Flegar's only goal of the day proved to be the game-winner as he tallied the deciding goal with 1 minute and 20 seconds left in the sudden-death extra-session to lift Plattsburgh State (7-1) to its fourth straight victory in men's lacrosse action over Clarkson, 13-12, at Hantz Turf Field on Wednesday afternoon. The host Golden Knights remain winless at 0-8.
Plattsburgh's Kyle Norchi led all scorers with four goals and six points. Luke Weidlein registered three assists, to go along with a pair of goals, to give him 102 for his career--the first Cardinal to surpass the century mark. Pete Morgan added three goals and four points, and Ryan Price scooped up a game-best 14 ground balls while going 20-of-29 in face offs.
Clarkson looked well on the way to its first victory of the season, jumping to a 4-0 lead to start the game and held a 4-1 advantage through the opening 15 minutes. Plattsburgh outscored the Knights 3-2 in the second quarter to cut Clarkson's lead to 6-4 at the half. Both teams tallied three goals apiece in the third. The Cardinals outscored the Green and Gold 5-3 in the fourth.
Clarkson, which led for most of the first three quarters, fell behind 12-9 midway through the fourth quarter as Plattsburgh went on a seven-goal run. The Knights forced overtime by scoring the last three goals in regulation to tie the contest through 60 minutes of action.
Matt McCabe, who scored two of Clarkson's final three goals, led the Green and Gold with four points (3-1). Classmate Brendon Shearin tied the game at 12-12 with his lone goal of the day with 3:34 left in the fourth.
The Cardinals were 3-of-4 in man-up situations, while the Knights went scoreless in three extra-man opportunities.
Plattsburgh outshot Clarkson 50-44, but the Knights held a 39-35 edge in ground balls. Ryan Cole made 14 saves in the Clarkson goal and picked up a team-high 10 ground balls. Logan Carpenter stopped nine shots to earn the win for the Cardinals.
