PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.--The Plattsburgh State men's soccer team used four different goal scorers on Friday to shut out first-place Oneonta State, 4-0, in State University of New York Athletic Conference action at the Field House Complex. The Cardinals improve to 9-2-1 overall and 3-2 in the SUNYAC, while the Red Dragons fall to 7-3-2 and 4-2.
This marks the largest margin of victory for Plattsburgh in the 31-game series, which Oneonta leads 23-7-1 all-time after several years as a NCAA Division I scholarship program. The Cardinals have won three games, with one tie, in the last four meetings after losing the previous nine. The four goals also represent the most allowed by the Red Dragons in the series that dates back to a 3-0 Plattsburgh win on Oct. 2, 1959.
Pat Shaughnessy got the scoring under way early in the 6th minute when he collected a loose ball from 10-yards out and buried his fourth goal of the season. The Cardinals led 1-0 at halftime.
It was all Plattsburgh in the second stanza. Chris Taylor curled in a free kick from 25 yards in the 55th minute. Chad Shennett and Jarred Antonucci scored their first goals of the year 15 minutes apart starting in the 70th. Matt Martin and Ryan Graig were credited with assists on the respective goals by Shennett and Antonucci.
The Red Dragons had a few good scoring opportunities, including in the 68th minute when Ray Fitzpatrick's blast from close range was blocked by the defense and then he sent the rebound over the crossbar.
Andy Heighington made three saves for his eighth shutout. Oneonta keeper Maxwell Siegelman (1 save) had an off-game after being named SUNYAC Player of the Week on Monday.
