PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - In its State University of New York Athletic Conference home opener, the nationally-ranked No. 11 Plattsburgh State women's soccer team battled it out against the Golden Eagles of Brockport but walked away with its first tie of the season, 1-1. Both goals came early in the first half, resulting in over 90 scoreless, but nonetheless action-packed, minutes of play to close out the contest.
The Cardinals came out slow in the first few minutes, but quickly jumped into gear after Kaitlin Collica netted her second goal of the season, unassisted, in the 12th minute. Collica gained control of the loose ball that resulted after a free kick by teammate Helen Giroux.
Brockport answered back four minutes later when Jessica VanAllen drilled a penalty kick into the lower left-hand corner of the goal, just out of reach of Plattsburgh's keeper, Ricci Celia.
Plattsburgh pushed hard and dominated the field for much of the game, but missed by inches when two different shots hit the crossbar. The Cardinals saw two more shots denied during overtime play when Brockport's 5-10 goalie, Erin Asquith, tipped them over top of the goal.
The Cardinals out-shot the Golden Eagles 19-11 overall, with 11 of their shots coming in the first half. Plattsburgh also took eight corner kicks to Brockport's three. Asquith made nine saves in goal for Brockport, while Celia recorded five for the Cardinals.
Plattsburgh now stands at 6-1-1 for the year, 1-0-1 in the SUNYAC. Meanwhile Brockport's record moves to 4-1-2 on the season, 1-0-1 in conference play.
The Cardinals suit up again tomorrow for a 1 p.m. start against visiting Geneseo. The Blue Knights also tied this evening. Their game against Potsdam finished scoreless, 0-0.
