PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Dr. Amy Ryan, Associate Professor of Biological Sciences, has been named SUNY Plattsburgh's Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR), as announced by President Dr. Alexander Enyedi.
"I am proud and excited to step into the role of Faculty Athletics Representative at Plattsburgh State," Dr. Ryan said. "It is a chance to support our student athletes in a bigger way—not just in their sports, but in the classroom and everything in between. I care a lot about making sure they are getting what they need to succeed and grow, both as students and as people. It means a lot to be part of that."
Dr. Ryan follows Mila Su, who served as the FAR for the past 16 years. The FAR role serves as the liaison between the academic and athletic units of the university and also represents the university in conference and NCAA affairs.
Dr. Ryan arrived in Plattsburgh in 2010, first serving as an Assistant Professor of Science and a General Education Coordinator at Clinton Community College before coming to SUNY Plattsburgh in 2016 as an Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences. After serving in that role for eight years, she was promoted to Associate Professor of Biological Sciences.
She received a Bachelor of Science in cellular biochemistry from SUNY Plattsburgh and her Ph.D. in neuroscience from the University of Virginia. Her dissertation was titled "Molecular Mechanism of Huntington's Disease Pathogenesis." As an undergraduate student, she was a teaching assistant and a tutor.
Dr. Ryan is a part of various committees at SUNY Plattsburgh, including the Prehealth Professions Advisory Committee, the Biology Department Assessment Committee, the Faculty Senate General Education Committee, and the Chemical Hygiene Committee, dedicating years of service to the university.
"I am happy to support Dr. Amy Ryan as the Faculty Athletics Representative for SUNY Plattsburgh," President Enyedi said. "Dr. Ryan brings a strong record of service to our academic community and a deep commitment to the success of our student-athletes. I am confident she will represent our campus with distinction and uphold the important connection between academic excellence and athletic achievement."
During her time at SUNY Plattsburgh, Dr. Ryan has long been a valued mentor to Cardinal student-athletes. In addition to being a visible supporter of Cardinal Athletics, she is a regular invitee to the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation's annual National Student-Athlete Day ceremony, an event where student-athletes personally invite a faculty/staff member who has supported them throughout their academic journey and collegiate experience.
"Cardinal Athletics is extremely proud of our long tradition of success both in and out of the classroom," Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation Mike Howard said. "We are very excited to get to work with Dr. Ryan on continuing to make Cardinal Country a destination for student-athletes looking to excel on all levels."
