NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team fell to New Paltz on the road in a closely contested State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) contest, falling 10-9 at North Turf Field on Saturday evening. The Cardinals had four players with multi-point performances led by senior
Ely Bruhns (Clifton Park, N.Y. / Shenendehowa) and sophomore
Peter Urso (Bay Shore, N.Y. / Bay Shore) with three points each. Bruhns finished with two assists and a goal while Urso had two goals and an assist.
Senior
Donald Woods (Rocky Point, N.Y. / Rocky Point) had two goals on the day, while senior
Logan Vilardi (West Babylon, N.Y. / West Babylon) had a goal and an assist for two points. First-year
Michael Ahlstedt (Shrub Oak, N.Y. / Lakeland) scored his first career goal while
Tim Keenan (Poughquag, N.Y. / Arlington) and
Dylan Ruland (Medford, N.Y. / Patchogue-Medford) also got on the board with a goal each. Senior
Jimbo Farrelly (West Nyack, N.Y. / Clarkstown South) went 16-21 on faceoffs and collected a game-high 13 ground balls while sophomore
Fynn Whitlock (Middlebury, Vt. / Middlebury Union) led the team in caused turnovers with five and added two ground balls.
For the Hawks, Killian Yombor led the team in points with four off a game-high three assists and a goal, while Nick Darcangelo and Finn Smith both tallied three goals. Ethan Scully finished with three points as well, recording two assists and a goal on the day. Noah Reed led his team in faceoff wins and ground balls with five and four, respectively.
The shot battle was close as the Hawks just outshot the Cardinals 39-37, placing 21 shots on goal while the Cardinals had 18 shots on goal. The Cardinals won the game on the ground, totaling 31 ground balls to the Hawks' 23, and also had a 16-6 advantage on faceoffs. Plattsburgh went 2-5 on extra-man opportunities while New Paltz scored once in four chances. The Cardinals finished 10-11 on clears, and the Hawks were a perfect 20-20.
Plattsburgh State falls to 5-6 (1-3 SUNYAC) and is back in action next Saturday, Apr. 19, when they host Oswego State for their Senior Day game at 1 p.m. Before the game, the Cardinals will honor their 13 seniors:

Plattsburgh's offense came out hot to start the first quarter, scoring the first four goals of the game. Bruhns buried the first goal of the game just 15 seconds into the action, followed by goals from Woods, Ruland, and Keenan as Plattsburgh took a 4-0 lead halfway through the quarter. The Hawks finally got on the board at the 6:18 mark when Anthony Senecal took advantage of an extra-man opportunity, burying the man-up goal off the assist from Scully, which made the score 4-1 Cardinals. Vilardi quickly responded, giving Plattsburgh back their four-goal lead. After both teams exchanged goals, the Hawks ended the quarter with back-to-back goals and made the score 6-4 Cardinals after one quarter of play.
After a high-scoring first quarter, both teams' offenses cooled down, scoring two goals each in the second quarter. The Hawks scored the first and last goals of the quarter, while Plattsburgh scored back-to-back goals from Ahlstedt and Urso in between as the Cardinals went into halftime with an 8-6 lead.
The third quarter was a defensive battle as the Hawks held the Cardinals scoreless on five shots and tacked on one goal, cutting the Cardinals' lead to 8-7 going into the fourth quarter.
After a scoreless third quarter, it didn't take long for the Cardinals to strike in the fourth as Urso netted an unassisted goal just under a minute into the final quarter and cushioned Plattsburgh's lead to 9-7. However, the Hawks responded with three straight goals and took a 10-9 lead at the 3:55 mark. With less than a minute left, the Cardinals had a chance to tie and did get two shots off, but ultimately fell 10-9.
Sophomore
Cole Orehosky (Hauppauge, N.Y. / Hauppauge) made 11 saves in the loss for Plattsburgh while Zach Novak made nine saves in the win for New Paltz.
