While Bruhns led the way with four points, he was closely followed by sophomore
Peter Urso (Bay Shore, N.Y. / Bay Shore), who recorded a three-goal hat trick for three points. Sophomore
Jamie Gipe (Baldwinsville, N.Y. / C. W. Baker) had a multi-goal outing with two goals, while sophomore
Dylan Ruland (Medford, N.Y. / Patchogue-Medford) had a multi-point performance with two assists. Woods and
Ethan Francey (Canton, N.Y. / Canton) both notched a goal in the overall performance. Defensively, sophomore
Fynn Whitlock (Middlebury, Vt. / Middlebury Union) led the way with six ground balls and two caused turnovers. Farrelly was solid on faceoffs, picking up 10 faceoff wins to go with his five ground balls, followed by K. Ruland with four.
For the Lakers, Corey O'Connor and Garrett Elston both recorded seven points as O'Connor led the team with a game-high six goals, and Elston led the team with a game-high four assists. Hayden Coney and Gavin Elston both finished with three goals, while Emmett Starowizc finished with four points. Logan Prescott led all players with a game-high 22 faceoff wins and a game-high 11 ground balls.
Oswego had the edge in shots, 57-40, recording 33 shots on goal while Plattsburgh had 22 shots on goal. The Lakers had a 43-36 advantage on ground balls and won 22 faceoffs to the Cardinals' 12. Plattsburgh went 1-3 on extra-man opportunities, while Oswego scored three times in seven chances. The Cardinals finished 15-23 on clears, and Oswego finished 20-25.
Plattsburgh State falls to 5-7 (1-4 SUNYAC) and next hosts Potsdam on Wednesday, Apr. 23, for a 4 p.m. opening faceoff. Oswego State moves to 9-3 (5-0 SUNYAC) and next hosts Cortland on Wednesday, Apr. 23, at 4 p.m.
The first quarter was a back-and-forth affair that featured nine goals between the two teams. It was Plattsburgh who jumped out first, scoring back-to-back goals off the sticks of Urso and Bruhns as Ruland registered the assist on the first goal. However, the Lakers responded in turn, tallying three straight goals and taking a 3-2 lead at the 6:11 mark. Ruland picked up another assist, this time he fed the ball to Woods, who got one pass the Oswego goalie for the score, tying the game at three at the 3:00 mark. Moments later, the Lakers regained the lead, notching back-to-back goals from Prescott and Garrett Elston. A late tally from Urso with 24 seconds left in the quarter brought the Cardinals within one and made the score 5-4 at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter began with both teams trading back-to-back scores as Oswego pushed their lead to 7-4 before goals from Bruhns and Francey brought the Cardinals back within one and made the score 7-6 with less than seven minutes remaining in the quarter. The Lakers outscored the Cardinals 2-1 to end the quarter as Gipe scored his first goal of the game at the 4:23 mark, and the Cardinals went into halftime trailing 9-7.
The third quarter was all Oswego as the Lakers started the quarter with five straight goals and extended their lead to 14-7 halfway through the quarter. The Cardinals finally stopped the Oswego run, tallying back-to-back scores from Urso and Bruhns at the 5:57 and 1:36 marks, but still trailed 14-9. A late goal from Coney with 17 seconds left pushed the Lakers' lead to 15-9 after three quarters of play.
After Gipe scored a man-up goal at the 13:12 mark, the Cardinals were held scoreless the rest of the fourth quarter as the Lakers tacked on five more goals and went on to win 20-10.
Sophomore
Cole Orehosky (Hauppauge, N.Y. / Hauppauge) made 12 saves in over 55 minutes of action, taking the loss in goal for the Cardinals, while junior
Jack Mulcahy (Poughkeepsie, N.Y. / Arlington) made one save in limited action. Seamus Hand made 10 saves in over 56 minutes of action, earning the win in goal for the Lakers, while Tyler Novak made two saves in limited action.
