PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State baseball team is looking to get back into postseason action for the third time in four seasons under fourth-year head coach
Sam Quinn-Loeb, as he returns with an experienced roster once again in 2025. After the team qualified for the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) tournament for the first time since 2012 in 2022, the Cardinals had one of their best campaigns in recent program history in 2024. The team's 24 wins last year were the most overall wins by Plattsburgh State since 2010 and their 10 wins in SUNYAC play matched the program record also set in 2010.
The team opens their season on Sunday, March 2, when they take on Penn State Berks in a doubleheader at Heritage Financial Park in Wappingers Falls, New York, home of the Hudson Valley Renegades.
"This is the deepest offensive team we have had since I have been here," said Quinn-Loeb, "We feel like we have the ability to repeat our success from last season with the key bats we have returning and with the arms we returned and have brought in."
Quinn-Loeb returns one of the best lineups in the league as All-Region honoree, SUNYAC All-Conference Second Team selection, and SUNYAC Defensive Player of the Year
Alex Kornblau (Pound Ridge, N.Y./Fox Lane) returns for his fifth-year with three-time All-SUNYAC selection, senior
Kyle Cremin (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic).
Infield:
The middle infield will once again be captained by Kornbalu who is coming off one of the most impressive campaigns in program history. The fifth-year set single-season records last year in home runs, runs, and total bases while also setting the program's new career home run record. He slashed .372/.481/.628 with eight homers, 29 RBI, 52 runs, and nine doubles and will be the everyday shortstop this season.
Cremin will give the team a huge presence in the middle of the order for the fourth straight season, as he returns to first base and will look to become the first person in program history to earn All-Conference honors in four straight seasons. Last year, despite missing 10 games, he led the team with 37 RBI, also hitting four homers while slashing .333/.448/.543. The other corner infield spot will see the welcome return of graduate student
Aidan Diltz (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) who led the team with a .378 batting average and drove in 33 runs with 51 hits in his first season at Plattsburgh.
Senior
Joey Di Rocco (Congers, N.Y./Clarkstown South) saw the bulk of time at second base last year and will look to be the main double-play partner alongside Kornblau this year. Di Rocco hit .258 last season and had three homers and 23 RBI over 93 at-bats. Sophomore
Jonathan Beale (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's Boys) figures to be an option there as well, hitting two homers and driving in eight runs in 10 games last season.
Sophomore
Austin Caldwell (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) is another bat that Quinn-Loeb will have a hard time keeping out of the lineup after he hit .343 last year in 67 at-bats. While first base is his primary position, he should see plenty of opportunity at DH early on this year.
Other returning infielders include sophomores
Tyler Martin (New Windsor, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy),
Nick Pace (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown), and
Michael Piccirillo (Glen Cove, N.Y./Glen Cove).
Newcomers to the infield group in 2025 are
Brody Burdo (Esopus, N.Y./Highland) and
Jacob Hayes (Montebello, N.Y./Suffern).
Outfield:
Unlike the infield, the Plattsburgh outfield will look a lot different for the Cardinals in 2025, with all three starters departing due to graduation last year. Graduate student
Ben Catrambone (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niksayuna) saw the most time patrolling the outfield last year, hitting .254 with a .367 on-base in 63 at-bats, while sophomore
Frankie Kowal (Shrub Oak, N.Y./Lakeland) hit .455 (10-22) with a homer and four doubles in limited action last year. Both figure to be in the mix for time in the outfield, but plenty of options and reinforcements come in this season to supplement last year's departures.
Senior
Justice Suafoa (Kinderhook, N.Y./Ichabod Crane) has been a solid bat for the Cardinals over the last two seasons with a career .310 average and .379 on-base and will make the transition to the outfield this year. Senior
Zach Rainville (Saranac, N.Y./Saranac), who appeared in 15 games last year, and sophomore
Luciano Fiorello (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall) will also return in 2025 for the Cardinals.
The Cardinal outfield will see five transfers who have collegiate experience join the unit this season, as they will look to create a veteran group in 2025. Senior
Josh Foglia (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) transferred in from NCAA Division II Saint Rose, where he made 18 starts last year and had a .417 on-base. Senior
TJ Beninati (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern), a Salem State transfer, has three years of college baseball experience, and junior
Colin Ross (Mastic Beach N.Y./William Floyd), an NCAA Division II St. Thomas Aquinas transfer, appeared in four games last season.
Ryan Hart (Portland, Ore./Jesuit), a Whitworth transfer, and
Jackson Pam (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East), a Hartford transfer, will also look to play a role in the outfield equation this year.
Newcomers to the group this year will be
Ryan Fowler (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) and
Finn Gaklik (Wappinger Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham).
Catcher:
Senior
Adam Wein (North Rockland, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep) returns to lead the catching group in 2025, after compiling a .378 on-base percentage along with 14 hits and 13 RBI last year. Sophomore
Ian Warren (Esopus, N.Y./Highland) will look to slide into a prominent role after going 4-13 with six walks in limited action last year.
Depth at the position will come from sophomore
Jake Calkins (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) and transfer sophomore
Dylan Lieberman (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa.
Pitchers:
The Cards come into 2025 looking to replace their ace from last season as
Andrew Veit was an All-Region and First-Team All-SUNYAC selection last year.
Chris Santic, who was an all-league selection in 2023, also departed after graduation, as the team will look for two new weekend starters this year.
The team will look to senior
Kolby Mordecki (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) to lead the staff, after a strong campaign that saw him start 11 games and finish with a 4-4 record and a 5.05 ERA in 51.2 innings. Senior
Nick Goldberg (Commack, N.Y./Commack), who was second on the team with 13 appearances, will look to be a reliable bullpen piece in 2025, and graduate student swingman
Tyler Kohn (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North), who had a 4.98 ERA in 21.2 innings, will look to build off a strong season last year. Senior
Logan Avin (Honolulu, Hawaii/Waterford (Conn.)) is another solid option for the team out of the pen, and sophomore
Jack Castillo (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) will look to propel himself into the weekend starting rotation after a 5.11 ERA last year.
Other returning arms to the unit this year include senior
Christian Diaz (Middletown, N.Y./Iona Prep), junior
Bostyn Duquette (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh), and sophomores
Ty Nelson (Rosedale, N.Y./Springfield Gardens),
Drew Romesser (Akron, N.Y./Akron), and
Justin Sargent (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna).
Transfer arms that will look to make an impact this year will be junior
Kaelen Clarkson (Barrie, Ontario/St. Joseph's Catholic), sophomore
Hunter Eberhart (East Hampton, N.Y./East Hampton), as well as juniors
Isaiah Maines (Hudson, N.Y./Hudson),
Kwintin Nurse (Wynantskill, N.Y./Troy), and
Joe Tarantino (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River).
Liam Kenaley (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca),
Richie Seebode (Bethlehem, N.Y./Bethlehem), and
Liam Suozzo (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) are the three first-years who will join the Plattsburgh pitching staff in 2025.
