No. 7 Men's Ice Hockey Rides Four Third-Period Goals to 6-2 Win at No.4 Geneseo

GENESEO, N.Y. – The No. 7 Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey team used a four-goal third period to skate past the No. 4 Geneseo Knights, as the Cards picked up a huge State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) road win. Bennett Stockdale (Ottawa, Ontario/Alabama Huntsville) led the way for the Cardinals, tallying four points, including the first two goals of the game in the first period.

The Plattsburgh State Cardinals are ranked No. 7 in the USCHO.com Division III Top-15 poll, while Geneseo is ranked No. 4.

Stockdale's four points led the way for Plattsburgh while goals also came from Tio D'Addario (Montreal, Quebec/Navan Grads), Paul Bryer (Clarkston, Mich./Islanders Hockey Club), Trey Thomas (Williams Lake, British Columbia/Brooks Bandits), and Ryan Butler (Kelowna, British Columbia/Adrian), with D'Addario's third-period power-play goal being the game-winner. Eli Shiller (Toronto, Ontario/Wellington Dukes) earned the win in net for Plattsburgh State, as he stopped a season-high 34 shots to move to 7-2 on the year.

Both teams went 1-4 on the power play, as the Cardinals outshot the Knights 40-36 over 60 minutes of action.

Plattsburgh State improves to 15-3 (8-2 SUNYAC) and will take on Brockport tomorrow, Jan. 27 at 4 p.m. at Wegman's Ice Arena as they look for another season sweep. Geneseo falls to 15-4 (8-2 SUNYAC) and will look to break a two-game skid against Potsdam at home tomorrow, Jan. 27.

The Cardinals skated to an early 1-0 lead on the road, swinging the momentum their way early in an important road matchup. Jagger Benson (Lynnfield, Mass./Cranbrook Bucks) freed up a loose puck along the back boards, where Stockdale was able to control the puck along the goal line, turning himself towards the goal for the score on the doorstep. Plattsburgh continued to outskate the Knights over the next several minutes of the first period, as Stockdale added to the lead off a Luk Jirousek (Whitehorse, Yukon/Alberni Valley Bulldogs) in transition for his second goal of the game at the 14:26 mark of the first stanza.

Geneseo responded just over a minute later, cutting the Cardinal lead in half with a Cooper Fensterstock goal with under five minutes to go in the period, leading to the eventual 2-1 score at the first intermission.
In the second period, the Knights utilized a bit of a momentum swing on a penalty kill and then a power play opportunity of their own for a power play goal to tie the game at the 12:22 mark of the second stanza. Geneseo looked to take control of the game in the period, as they took 17 shots on goal in the period to Plattsburgh's 10.

In a pivotal third period, an early Knight's penalty put the Cardinals on the advantage, and another penalty shortly after gave Plattsburgh a five-on-three opportunity. Working around the offensive zone, D'Addario rebounded and scored a Stockdale shot on goal, giving the Cards a 3-2 lead.

Plattsburgh State added on just over two minutes later in the third stanza, as a Bryer one-timer from the point found the top shelf for a spectacular goal, further pushing the momentum towards the Cardinals. Stockdale picked up his fourth and final point of the night on Thomas' goal, as Plattsburgh State skated out ahead of the Knights into their offensive zone for two on one opportunity where Stockdale found Thomas for the score.

With just under half of the period left, Plattsburgh continued to control the puck and play, despite penalties adding up on both sides. Over the final couple of minutes, Geneseo pulled their goalie with men in the box, adding up to a six-on-three advantage at one point, but Shiller and the Cards stood tall, killing each penalty down the stretch and eventually springing the Butler empty netter. The senior forward skated onto the ice right as Plattsburgh gained control in their defensive zone where Adam Tretowicz (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Buffalo Jr. Sabres) sent the puck up the ice right to Butler for the empty net score. The pass gave Tretowicz his second assist of the game, giving him his second straight multi-point game.

Jacob Torgner picked up his first of the season for the Knights, stopping 34 shots while allowing five goals in just over 56 minutes of action.
