BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The No. 7 Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey team tied with the Brockport Golden Eagles on Saturday evening, earning a point toward the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) standings. After leading for the vast majority of the game, a late goal from Brockport helped push the game to overtime, where neither team was able to find the back of the net.
The Plattsburgh State Cardinals are currently ranked No. 7 in the USCHO.com Division III Top-15 Poll.
Paul Bryer (Clarkston, Mich./Islanders Hockey Club) scored the Cards' lone goal, as
Kevin Weaver-Vitale (Toronto, Ontario/Markham Royals) and
Ryan Bonfield (Kemptville, Ontario/Brockville Braves) each added assists.
Jacob Hearne (Ennismore, Ontario/Toronto Jr. Canadiens) picked up a tie for his effort in net, as he made 27 saves.
The Cards outshot the Golden Eagles 43-28 on the day and were 1-4 on the power play while killing three advantage opportunities for Brockport.
Plattsburgh State moves to 15-3-1 (8-2-1 SUNYAC) and next welcomes No. 14 Norwich to town on Wednesday, Jan. 31 for a big non-conference matchup. Brockport moves to 6-11-3 (3-7-1) on the season and picks up a huge point as they fight for a SUNYAC playoff spot. They next travel to Oswego State on Friday, Feb. 2.
Bryer and the Cards worked quickly in the first period to get on the scoreboard, working off the momentum from the big win against Geneseo the night before. Working on a power play opportunity, Weaver-Vitale took a long shot from just in front of the blue line, where Bryer was able to redirect the puck into the net through the top shelf for the early lead.
Plattsburgh continued to keep up the pressure offensively following the power play goal, as they put up 13 shots in both the first and second periods, controlling the pace and the puck throughout. Even in the final period, with a lead they could try and protect, the Cards were still aggressive outshooting the Golden Eagles 10-5.
The Cardinals looked to be playing strong defense in the final period to hold onto the lead, but a turnover in the Brockport offensive zone led to two skaters against Hearne, who was unable to stop a Josh Grund shot, as the Golden Eagles tied the game with less than a minute and a half to go.
Before the end of regulation, Plattsburgh got a couple of shots on the net but was unable to beat Dylan Weimer in the net for Brockport. The same continued in overtime, as the Golden Eagle goaltender stood tall to clinch the 1-1 tie. Weimer made 42 saves in total for Brockport in 65 minutes of action.
