PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's tennis team fell to the defending State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Champions on Saturday afternoon, 9-0. The women played well against some elite competition, earning a couple of set wins throughout the match.
The Cardinals fall to 7-4 (1-3) and now look towards their Binghamton Tennis Center trip where they will play three matches in three days, beginning with SUNY Brockport on Thursday, Oct. 5 at 3 p.m. The New Paltz Hawks moved to 4-2 (4-0 SUNYAC) with the win and also play on Thursday, Oct. 5 at the Binghamton Tennis Center against Geneseo.
The doubles matches saw three wins for the Hawks, but Plattsburgh played tough, scoring twice in No. 1 and No.2 doubles, losing 8-2 in both. In No. 3 doubles,
Jacqueline Svantner (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) and
Hallie Hurwitz (Beekmantown, N.Y./Beekmantown) challenged their opponents well, eventually falling 8-4.
Singles play saw some swift wins in the first four singles, allowing the Hawks to clinch the win. However, in No. 5 and No. 6 singles, Hurwitz and
Jacklin Mitchell (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Peru) each won a set, taking their opponents to three sets. Hurwitz won her second set at No. 5 singles but fell in three sets 1-6, 6-1, 1-6 and Mitchell forced a tiebreaker in her match after winning the first set in No. 6 singles, falling 6-2, 2-6, 6-10. The loss marked the first of her collegiate career for Mitchell, who is now 8-1 in 2023.
