BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's tennis picked up an important State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) win on Thursday afternoon, defeating the Brockport Golden Eagles 7-2 in Binghamton. The Cards help keep their playoff hopes alive, as they meet with Geneseo tomorrow, who finished one win ahead of Plattsburgh by virtue of their head-to-head matchup.
The Cards move to 8-4 (2-3 SUNYAC) with the win and are approaching their program record of 10 wins which was set in the 2018 season. They next play Geneseo at the Binghamton Tennis Center tomorrow, October 6, at 3 p.m. Brockport falls to 2-6 and next plays Oneonta in Binghamton at 6 p.m. tomorrow.
The match began with some excellent doubles play, as the Cards were able to escape with the advantage heading into singles, winning both No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. The No. 3 doubles pair of
Jacqueline Svantner (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) and
Hallie Hurwitz (Beekmantown, N.Y./Beekmantown) battled back from a 3-6 deficit to win 8-6, giving the Cards their first win of the match after the loss at No. 1 doubles. In No. 2 doubles,
Ava Carey (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet) and
Jacklin Mitchell (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Peru) won a tiebreaker in what was a thriller, winning 8-7 (8-6).
In singles play, Plattsburgh took over, winning five of the six matches, and the only loss at No. 1 singles came from an excellently played game, as
Samantha Svantner (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) lost a marathon tiebreaker in the first set before losing, with a score of 7-6 (12-10), 6-3.
The first win came from Carey at No. 4 singles, as she swiftly defeated her opponent 6-2, 6-2.
Sarah Benowitz (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown North) also easily won her match at No. 3 singles, winning 6-0. 6-2, putting Plattsburgh a win away from clinching the victory.
Nicole Svantner (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) clinched the team victory at No. 2 singles 6-2, 7-5, besting her opponent in a tough second set. Mitchell then continued her strong play this season with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 6 singles, before Hurwitz was the victor at No. 5 singles 6-4, 6-3 for the team's final victory of the day.
