PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's tennis team was dominant for the second straight day, as the team won 9-0 against Mount Saint Mary College (NY). The Cardinals posted a 9-0 win for the second straight day as the team has begun a strong streak of play.
With the win, Plattsburgh improves to 7-3 and will welcome defending conference champs SUNY New Paltz to Plattsburgh in league play tomorrow, Sept. 30 at noon. The Knights fall to 0-4 with the loss and next host St. Joseph's University Long Island on Saturday, Sept. 30 at 3 p.m.
The Cards began their day continuing the dominance they displayed yesterday, sweeping double action. The first finish came from
Kristy Cantwell (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) and
Megan Phelps (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) as they were the victors at No. 3 doubles in their first career doubles match, winning 8-0.
Jacqueline Svantner (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) and
Hallie Hurwitz (Beekmantown, N.Y./Beekmantown) followed with an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles, and the doubles action was concluded with an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles from
Jacklin Mitchell (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Peru) and
Ava Carey (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet).
In singles action, the excellent Cardinal play did not let up, as Phelps picked up a quick win at No. 4 singles 6-4, 6-0.
Jacklin Mitchell followed at No. 3 singles with the match-clinching win, defeating her opponent 6-0, 6-1 to stay undefeated on the season. Cantwell was the next finisher, winning 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5 singles closely followed by
Sarah Benowitz (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown North) winning 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. Hurwitz won a close first set at No. 2 singles and then finished up strong with a 7-6, 6-1 win. The final match to finish saw
Abigail Jarrett (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) win her first career match, 6-3, 6-0.
