JOHNSON, Vt. – The Plattsburgh State women's tennis earned a clean sweep over the Vermont State University Johnson Badgers, defeating Johnson State 9-0 in non-conference play. The Cards had three players earn their first career singles win in their college debuts and two Cardinals earned their first career wins at No. 3 doubles.
Plattsburgh moves to 6-3 with the win and will return home tomorrow, Sept. 29 to take on Mount Saint Mary College (N.Y.) at 4 p.m. The Badgers fall to 2-8 with the loss and wrap up their 2023 campaign.
The Cardinals won all three matches in doubles action, beginning with
Nicole Svantner (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) and
Samantha Svantner (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) at No. 1 doubles winning 8-2.
Jacqueline Svantner (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) and
Hallie Hurwitz (Beekmantwon, N.Y./Beekmantown) won at No. 2 doubles next, 8-2, moving their record this season to 5-2 as a pairing. In the final doubles match to finish,
Andrea Bingham (Wynantskill, N.Y./Averill Park) and
Jenna Medina (Westbury, N.Y./W.T. Clarke) won their first collegiate match as the No. 3 doubles pair, winning 8-4 to finish the doubles sweep.
In singles play, the Cardinal's first result came from
Nicole Svantner, who won her second career match at No. 1 singles, 6-1-, 6-1. Hurwitz followed with a win at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-3, clinching the Plattsburgh win and
Megan Phelps (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) was next to finish with her first win as a Cardinal, winning 6-2, 6-3.
Ava Carey (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet) earned her first win at No. 2 singles next, winning in three sets. The final two matches were the first career wins for
Faith Stone (Glens Falls, N.Y./Glens Falls) and
Kristy Cantwell (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh), with Stone winning at No. 6 singles (6-1, 6-0) and Cantwell winning at No. 5 singles (6-2, 6-1).
