Plattsburgh, N.Y. – Plattsburgh State Baseball (11-12, 0-6) rode the excellent start from
Ryan Lawyer (Schenectady, NY/Colonie Central) to a convincing 9-2 win over Norwich (13-13, 4-8) on Monday. Lawyer, working in just his second start of the season and career at Plattsburgh, went six strong innings allowing just one run and striking out six to earn his first win.
The Cardinals offense also was able to pick up where they left off on Saturday. After scoring 13 runs against Cortland, the most ever against the national powerhouse, the offense was able to rack up 11 hits and scored nine runs to back the strong pitching outing.
Steve Messerschmitt (Fishkill, NY/Carmel) continued his hot play as of late, as the graduate student finished 2-5 with four RBIs and a double.
Aaron Roman (Pelham, NY/Pelham Memorial) was also swinging a hot stick, as the senior finished 2-3 with two RBIs and runs scored.
After two full innings of scoreless ball, and another scoreless inning from Lawyer in the top of the third, the Plattsburgh offense went to work against the Norwich starter. Three straight hit-by-pitches loaded the bases the Cardinals and Roman was able to cash in a run with an RBI single to left. After
Alex Kornblau (Pound Ridge, NY.Fox Lane) came in to score on a wild pitch, Messerschmitt smoked a pitch deep in the right field gap to plate two and earn his team-leading ninth double of the season.
Dylan Reilly (Lawrence, NY/Holy Trinity Diocesan) tacked on a run in the fourth with an RBI double down the left field, as the senior made his first start of the season. He later came around to score on a Roman sacrifice fly to bring the score to 6-0 Plattsburgh.
Pinch-hitting in the fifth-inning,
Andrew Veit (Yaphank, NY/Bellport) singled up the middle to plate a run, extending the lead to seven runs. In the following inning, Messereschmit brought in the final two runs of the day on a single to left, tying his career-high of four RBIs which he also tied in the previous game for Plattsburgh.
The Cardinal bullpen was strong, as the
Tyler Kohn (Ronkonkoma, NY/Sachem North) threw two scoreless innings and was followed by
Kolby Mordecki (Poughkeepsie, NY/Roy C. Ketcham) who recorded the final three outs.
Messerschmitt recorded his fifth multi-hit game of the season and his second game in a row with 4 RBIs. The graduate student is 5 for his last 10 and has driven in eight runs in that span. Kornblau raised his season average to .478 with his 1-2 performance on Monday. Before today, his .477 average was 10
th in the country and second in the conference, with Oswego's Ryan Enos currently having the second highest average in Division III Baseball.
The Cardinals will be back in action on Wednesday, April 20 at 3 p.m. as they will host St. Lawrence for a single non-conference game.
