No. 3 Women's Ice Hockey Blanks Saint Michael's, 6-0, in Exhibition Finale

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.
– The No. 3 Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey team completed the exhibition portion of its schedule with a 6-0 victory over Saint Michael's College on Saturday afternoon at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena.
 
Plattsburgh State is ranked at No. 3 in the DCU/USCHO.com Women's Division III Top-15 Poll.
 
Junior forward Ciara Wall (Stoneham, Mass./University of New Hampshire) scored twice, while graduate student forward Nicole Unsworth (Milwaukee, Wis./East Coast Wizards) recorded three points on a goal and two assists.
 
The Cardinals finished the game with a 54-18 edge in shots on goal and went 1-for-6 on the power play. The Purple Knights were scoreless in two chances with the extra skater.
 
Plattsburgh State opens up its regular season on Friday, Nov. 4, at 4 p.m. when it visits SUNY Morrisville. Saint Michael's, which is 1-5-0 so far this season, next visits Franklin Pierce University on Friday, Nov. 4, at 7:30 p.m.
 
Senior forward Julia Masotta (Tewksbury, Mass./Norwich University) scored just 14 seconds into the contest to set the tone early. Junior forward Mae Olshansky (Wilmette, Ill./North American Hockey Academy) intercepted a clearing attempt along the right boards in the offensive zone and got the puck to Masotta in the right circle. Masotta skated into the slot and beat the goaltender high glove side.
 
At the 1:00 mark of the first period—just 46 seconds later—Wall added to the Cardinal lead. Unsworth passed to first-year defenseman Taya Balfour (Moorestown, N.J./Philadelphia Jr. Flyers) on the right point, and Balfour took a shot that was saved. Wall took advantage of the loose puck on the rebound and hammered it home.
 
Unsworth made it a 3-0 game at 14:59 of the first period. Balfour chipped the puck ahead to Unsworth, springing her ahead out of the defensive zone. Unsworth entered the zone and skated into the slot, where she ripped a shot past the goaltender glove side.
 
Just 38 seconds later, first-year forward Emma McLean (Burlington, Mass./Pomfret School) extended the Cardinal advantage to 4-0. Junior forward Rivers Morris (Braintree, Mass./Thayer Academy) took two shots that were saved before McLean poked the puck past the netminder on a rebound. First-year defenseman Francesca Caterina (Cambridge, Mass./Pittsburgh Penguins Elite) was credited with the secondary assist.
 
Senior forward Ivy Boric (Newport Beach, Calif./Anaheim Lady Ducks) entered the scoring column at 12:11 of the second period. Boric led the Cardinals on the rush and passed to Unsworth in the neutral zone. Unsworth centered a pass to Boric, and Boric one-timed a shot that beat the goaltender at close range.
 
Plattsburgh State rounded out scoring at 13:50 of the second period when Wall scored on the power play. Senior defenseman Kendall Wasik (Novi, Mich./HoneyBaked) passed to Masotta in the neutral zone, and Masotta poked the puck ahead to Wall after battling along the right boards. Wall skated into the slot and scored glove side for her second marker of the afternoon.
 
Neither team scored in the third period, though the Cardinals did own a 20-9 edge in shots on goal in the final frame.
 
Senior goaltender Chloe Beaubien (Colorado Springs, Colo./Ontario Hockey Academy) made 12 saves and graduate student goaltender Ashley Davis (Winterville, N.C./Northwood School) added six in a combined shutout for the Cardinals, while first-year goaltender Annika Lavender made 36 saves against two goals allowed in 44:23 of action in reserve duty.
