Cardinals Fall to No. 2 Norwich in Season Opener

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey team opened its 2026-27 campaign on Saturday, hosting No. 2 Norwich University in a non-conference matchup at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena. The Cardinals fell to the nationally ranked Cadets, 3-0, to begin the season.

The two programs met in Plattsburgh to open last season as well, with the Cardinals earning a 3-0 victory over Norwich. The Cadets, who advanced to the NCAA Semifinals last season, look to avenge that loss.

Norwich opened the scoring at the 14:05 mark of the first period, capitalizing on a power-play opportunity as Geena Cookinham found the back of the net off an assist from Alex Leslie to give the Cadets a 1-0 advantage.

The Cardinals looked to respond in the second period, but Norwich extended its lead late in the frame. Breanna Ricker scored at 17:04, with Madalyn Liles and Dani Ammons picking up assists, sending the Cadets into the second intermission with a 2-0 lead.

Plattsburgh continued to battle in the third period, but Norwich's defense held the Cardinals off the scoreboard. Cookinham added her second goal of the evening with just under one minute remaining, scoring a shorthanded empty netter at 19:01 to secure the 3-0 victory for the Cadets.

The Cardinals finished 0-for-5 on the power play, while Norwich converted its lone power-play opportunity.

With the loss, Plattsburgh State moves to 0-1 on the season and returns to action next Saturday, Nov. 7, hosting Worcester State University at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena. The matchup will feature a special celebration as the program honors its 2006-07 and 2007-08 national championship-winning teams with their induction into the Plattsburgh State Athletics Hall of Fame.
