SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. – The No. 3 Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey team took to the ice against an opponent for the first time in 2022-23 on Friday night, defeating Saint Michael's College, 2-1, in an exhibition game.
Plattsburgh State is ranked at No. 3 in the DCU/USCHO.com Women's Division III Top-15 Poll.
The Cardinals finished with a 50-24 edge in shots on goal, while both teams were scoreless on the power play; Saint Michael's was 0-for-5, while Plattsburgh State was 0-for-3.
The two teams will complete the exhibition series tomorrow at 3 p.m. when they face off at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena.
After a scoreless first period and several quality scoring chances, Plattsburgh State finally broke through with 14:14 elapsed in the second period when senior forward
Julia Masotta (Tewksbury, Mass./Norwich University) redirected a shot by first-year defenseman
Su-An Cho (Madison, Ala./Florida Alliance) into the back of the net. Senior forward
Ivy Boric (Newport Beach, Calif./Anaheim Lady Ducks) also earned an assist on the score.
First-year forward
Emma McLean (Burlington, Mass./Pomfret School) doubled the lead at 10:54 of the third period, scoring glove side from the slot. Graduate student forward
Sara Krauseneck (Saginaw, Mich./Northern Cyclones) and senior defenseman
Sierra Benjamin (Palm Coast, Fla./Northwood School) were credited with assists on McLean's score.
Saint Michael's cut the lead in half with two minutes remaining in regulation, as senior forward Maeghan Kennard scored five-hole after splitting a pair of defenders. Junior forward Mary Leys picked up the assist on the goal.
Senior goaltender
Lilla Nease (Lake Forest, Calif./Anaheim Lady Ducks) played the full 60 minutes in goal for the Cardinals, making 23 stops. Junior goaltender Carissa Mudrak had a 48-save effort for the Purple Knights.
