PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State baseball team is set to open the 2020 season with a non-conference doubleheader at Maritime College in Throggs Neck, N.Y. on Sunday, March 1.

Plattsburgh State, which finished with a 12-20 overall record and a 6-12 record in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play in 2019, enters its 19th season under head coach Kris Doorey.

"After taking a step forward last year and missing out on a return to the SUNYAC tournament on a tie-breaker, this year's team is excited about the opportunities that are ahead of them," Doorey said. "With five starters returning to the everyday lineup and the addition of some newcomers, I believe that we have the ability to get over the hump and get back to the SUNYAC Tournament this season."

Plattsburgh State's roster consists of 13 returners and 18 newcomers in 2020.

CATCHERS:
Returning behind the plate for the Cardinals are seniors Santino Ycaza (Mastic, N.Y./Brentwood Sonderling) and Anthony Maag (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches), as well as sophomore Jake Hutton (Albany, N.Y./Colonie Central).

Ycaza appeared in 15 games, including nine starts, in 2019 and batted .231 with a .355 on-base percentage. Maag played in 15 games (10 starts) last season and Hutton played in 12 games (seven starts).
 
INFIELD:
Returning to the infield are senior shortstop and team captain Stephen Bryant (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches), senior third baseman Simon Alvarez (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington), senior first baseman Stephen Lydon (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) and senior second baseman Jack Bermingham (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury).

Bryant was named to the SUNYAC 2019 Baseball All-Conference Second Team. He led the SUNYAC in assists with 102, while ranking third in stolen bases with 20, tied for fifth in triples with three, sixth in on-base percentage at .443, ninth in batting average at .327 and tied for ninth in walks with 19. Bryant led the team in 2019 in assists, walks, triples, hits (35) and total bases (46), while tying for the team lead in runs (21). In addition, He was second in batting average, on-base percentage, at bats (107) and RBI (14).

"A true role model for our players, Stephen is a great example of what we expect from our student-athletes," Doorey said. "He is one of the top players in the SUNYAC.

Alvarez played in 21 games (20 starts) last season and batted .257 with a .308 on-base percentage, four doubles, one triple, one home run, six walks and 11 RBI.

Lydon batted .278 with a .292 on-base percentage, 30 hits, four doubles, one triple, one home run, 17 RBI and 10 runs scored.

Bermingham played in 10 games, including four starts, in 2019.

Joining the infield are freshman second baseman Lucas DiGiovanni (Huntington, N.Y./Elwood-John Glenn), freshman infielder and pitcher Christian Ott (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston), freshman first baseman Jacob Buell (Minoa, N.Y./East Syracuse Minoa), freshman corner infielder Steve Messerschmitt (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel), freshman infielder and pitcher Nate Guillen (Haverstraw, N.Y./North Rockland) and freshman infielder Conner Gonzalski (Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse).  

OUTFIELD:
Returning in the outfield is junior Erik Matz (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford), who batted .247 with a .359 on-base percentage, 21 hits, 15 walks, three doubles, 11 RBI and 21 runs scored over 29 games played (25 starts) last season.

Newcomers include freshman Michael Rasquin (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City), freshman Kaden Kowalowski (Beekmantown, N.Y./Beekmantown), freshman Cody Peryea (Altona, N.Y./Northern Adirondack), freshman outfielder and pitcher Hayden Ives (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Ogdensburg Free Academy) and freshman Daniel Cardito (Malverne, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial).   

PITCHERS:
Veterans toeing the rubber this season are senior right-hander Alec Fauvell (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West), junior right-hander Matthew Triola (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs), senior right-hander Connor Lyons (Brookhaven, N.Y./Bellport), senior left-hander Kyle Petruzzi (West Islip, N.Y./West Babylon) and sophomore right-hander Pierce Steinberg (Mahopac, N.Y./The Harvey School).

Fauvell finished 2019 with a 1-0 record, a 1.93 ERA, eight strikeouts, two walks and a .257 opposing batting average over 9 1/3 innings.

Triola pitched to a 2-3 record with a 5.65 ERA, 11 strikeouts and 10 walks, while holding opposing batters to a .293 batting average over 28 2/3 innings pitched last season.

Lyons made six appearances with five coming out of the bullpen last season. He pitched 6 1/3 innings.

Petruzzi pitched to a 4.91 ERA with a .240 batting average against in 7 1/3 innings over six relief appearances in 2019.

Last season, Steinberg recorded a 0.00 ERA with seven strikeouts, three walks and a .158 batting average against in six innings pitched over five relief appearances.

New to the pitching staff in 2020 are junior right-hander Chase Blazak (Pelham, N.H./Bishop Guertin), freshman right-hander Daniel Grant (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle), Guillen (right-hander), sophomore left-hander and right-hander David Ghiloni (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley), Ives (left-hander), freshman Gabe Mounkhall (Valley Cottage, N.Y./Nyack), Ott (right-hander), freshman Ryan Nista (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia), freshman Peter Gregory (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) and freshman Jorge Victoria (Bronx, N.Y./Walton).
 
Blazak, who was on the team in 2018, pitched 12 2/3 innings with 14 strikeouts and eight walks over five appearances (two starts) that season.
 
SCHEDULE:
The Cardinals open up the season with three consecutive non-conference road doubleheaders, starting at Maritime College (Sunday, March 1). The Cardinals then play at the College of New Jersey (Saturday, March 7) and at Farmingdale State College (Sunday, March 8).

Plattsburgh State then heads to Florida for the Russmatt Central Florida Invitational in Winter Haven, Fla. The Cardinals will play four games from March 15-18, against opponents yet to be announced. The Cardinals wrap up their Florida trip with a three-game State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) series against Fredonia from Friday-Saturday, March 20-21.

Upon returning from Florida, Plattsburgh State continues SUNYAC play with a three-game series at SUNY New Paltz (Friday-Saturday, March 27-28). The Cardinals then step away from SUNYAC competition for five straight non-conference games. Plattsburgh State plays at Union College on Thursday, April 2, and at SUNY Poly in a three-game series on Saturday-Sunday, April 4-5. The Cardinals then welcome St. Lawrence University to Chip Cummings Field for their home-opening doubleheader on Tuesday, April 7.

The Cardinals will then face conference foe SUNY Oneonta in a three-game home series (Friday-Saturday, April 10-11), before wrapping up their season-long five-game homestand with a non-conference game against Skidmore College on Tuesday, April 14.     

Plattsburgh State then goes on a five-game road trip that commences with a three-game SUNYAC series at SUNY Cortland (Friday-Saturday, April 17-18) and concludes with a non-conference doubleheader at Norwich University (Monday, April 20).

Returning home, Plattsburgh State faces Middlebury College in a non-conference game on Wednesday, April 22, and The College at Brockport for a three-game SUNYAC series from Friday-Saturday, April 24-25, at Chip Cummings Field.

The Cardinals conclude non-conference play with single games at Clarkson University (Tuesday, April 28) and SUNY Canton (Thursday, April 30). Plattsburgh State finishes regular-season play with a three-game SUNYAC series against Oswego State from Friday-Saturday, May 1-2, at Chip Cummings Field.  

The top four teams in the final regular-season conference standings will qualify for the double-elimination SUNYAC Tournament, which is set to run from Thursday-Saturday, May 7-9, at the site of the top seed.
