Women’s Soccer Outlasted by Buffalo State 3-2 in Double Overtime

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Plattsburgh State women's soccer suffered a 3-2 double-overtime setback to Buffalo State in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) match on Saturday afternoon at Coyer Field.

Plattsburgh State (4-3-1, 0-1-1 SUNYAC) scored the only goal of the first half to take a 1-0 lead over Buffalo State (4-5-1, 1-1-0 SUNYAC) into halftime. In the 36th minute, sophomore forward Allison Seidman (Commack, N.Y./Commack) took a pass from a teammate near midfield and sprinted down the right side of the the pitch into the 18-yard box. Seidman then made a pass across to the left side of the six-yard box. Sophomore forward Kirsten Villemaire (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown), the reigning PrestoSports SUNYAC Offensive Athlete of the Week, redirected Seidman's pass with her left foot into the back of the net.

Neither team would score again until the 79th minute of the match when Buffalo State's Sarah Berlinger tied the contest at 1-1. Allie Reeds played a cross from the right side of the field into the 18-yard box, where Berlinger finished for the goal.

Buffalo State took a 2-1 lead in the 84th minute on a goal by Alexis Hanson, who timed a run to get behind the defense. Hanson ran onto a through ball played by Reeds. Plattsburgh State's goalkeeper came out to challenge for the ball, but Hanson dribbled around the goalkeeper and scored into the vacated net.

Plattsburgh State fought back to tie the match at 2-2 with nine seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime. The Cardinals had a corner kick from the left corner that was taken by sophomore forward Taylor Tous (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue). Coming up from her position as a defender, senior Sarah Bonner (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) – the defending PrestoSports SUNYAC Defensive Athlete of the Week – never stopped as she timed her run into the six-yard box and headed in Touse's corner kick.

After neither team scored in the first overtime period, Hanson tallied the golden goal for Buffalo State in the 103rd minute to hand Plattsburgh State the 3-2 setback. Hanson dribbled past a couple of defenders into the top-right portion of the 18-yard box and scored with a high shot.

Freshman goalkeeper Julia Ennis (Carmel, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) (4-3-1) matched her career high with eight saves in the match for Plattsburgh State. She also made eight saves in the Cardinals' match against Skidmore on Saturday, Sept. 14.

Taylor Carillo (3-5-0) stopped nine shots in net Buffalo State.

Shots were 25-23 in favor of Buffalo State, while Plattsburgh State held a 9-3 edge in corner kicks.

With her seventh goal of 2019, Villemaire matched her previous career high for goals in a season that she had previously achieved in 2018. She has also scored in three consecutive matches – recording five goals over that span.

With her third goal of 2019, Bonner set a career best for goals in a season.
