MANCHESTER, Vt. – Junior forward
Katie Matott (Rouses Point, N.Y./Northeastern Clinton) recorded two goals in the Plattsburgh State women's soccer season opener 4-2 win over Castleton University on Friday at Applejack Stadium.
Matott's first goal came at the 7:16 mark in the first half after freshman
Allison Seidman (Commack, N.Y. / Commack) passed the ball from five yards out down the left side to make it a 1-0 game.
Castleton tied the game in the 15th minute with a long ball from the midfield that was chased down and slotted into the lower left corner.
The Cardinals took the lead back in the 35th minute when freshman forward
Kirsten Villemaire (Plattsburgh, N.Y. / Beekmantown) recorded her first collegiate goal after kicking the ball into the back post off a cross from the right side.
Two minutes later Seidman scored her first collegiate goal off a rebound with the assist from sophomore midfielder
Abigail Seamans (Diamond Point, N.Y. / Bolton Central).
Plattsburgh State out shot Castleton 14-6 in the first half and led 3-1 heading into the second.
Matott's second goal came at the 56:13 mark with another assist from Seidman off a loose ball six yards out that was passed up the middle.
Castleton cut the Cardinals lead in half when they scored off a rebound in the 73rd minute. Plattsburgh State's defense was able to hold off the Spartans to take the 4-2 win.
Graduate goalkeeper
Taylor Adams (Schenectady, N.Y./Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons) played all 90:00 minutes between the pipes to record her first win of the season.
Plattsburgh State is now 1-0 to start the year and will take on the Colby-Sawyer Chargers Saturday at 3 p.m. at Kelsey Soccer Field.
