PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State baseball team improves to 12-24 overall after sweeping SUNY Canton (7-27) in their final home games of the season Thursday evening at Chip Cummings Field.
GAME ONE: Plattsburgh State 7, Canton 6
Sophomore
Keller Kowalowski (Plattsburgh, N.Y. / Beekmantown) went 2-for-2 at the plate with one RBI and one run while senior
Joe Deland (Farmingville, N.Y. / Sachem East) was 1-for-2 with two RBIs and one run.
Deland led off the second inning with a single to left field and scored off a throwing error by the pitcher for a failed pick off attempt and Kowalowski scored off a ground out to make it a 2-0 game.
Canton cut the lead in half when they scored in the top of the third and took a one run advantage after scoring two runs in the fourth off a double down the left field line.
The Cardinals rallied in the fifth inning scoring five run.
Freshman
Jack Bermingham (Monroe, N.Y. / Monroe-Woodbury) scored off a single from junior
Jon Craft (Smithtown, N.Y. / Smithtown West) to tie the game.
Freshman
Anthony Maag (Center Moriches, N.Y. / Center Moriches) scored off a single from sophomore
Stephen Bryant (Center Moriches, N.Y. / Center Moriches), Craft and Bryant scored off a fielder's choice and junior
Patrick Bryant (Center Moriches, N.Y. / Center Moriches) scored off a sacrifice fly from Kowalowski to make it a 7-3 game.
Canton attempted to make a comeback in the top of the seventh recording three runs off a wild pitch and two sacrifice flies but the Cardinals defense was able to shut them down and take the one run win.
Junior
PJ Weeks (Bayport, N.Y. / Bayport-Blue Point) pitched six inning and gave up seven hits, six runs, walked two and struck out five.
Sophomore
Brantley Marion (Plattsburgh, N.Y. / Beekmantown) walked one batter and Junior
Ryan Whalen (Plattsburgh, N.Y. / Plattsburgh) pitched one inning.
GAME TWO: Plattsburgh State 3, Canton 1
P. Bryant and senior
Noah Clark (Toms River, N.J. / Toms River East) each went 2-for-2 at the plate with one RBI while S. Bryant was 1-for-2 with two runs.
S. Bryant scored in the first off a single to right field from Kowalowski and scored again in the second off a triple to center field by P. Bryant.
Kowalowski scored in the fourth off a single from Clark to make it a 3-0 game.
Canton recorded their only run in the seventh off a single to right field but couldn't score anymore runs and the Cardinals took their second win.
Junior
Matt Fox (Shoreham, N.Y. / Shoreham-Wading River) pitched all seven innings and scattered five hits, one run, walked two and struck out five.
The Cardinals will travel to SUNY Canton Sunday, May 6 for a doubleheader starting at noon.
