Plattsburgh State Baseball Lose To Johns Hopkins 10-3, Bounce Back To Beat Alfred State 6-2

FORT MYERS, Fla – Freshman Matthew Triola (Saratoga Springs, N.Y. / Saratoga Springs) came in as a relief pitcher for the Plattsburgh State baseball team in game two against Alfred State to break the program record for longest relief appearance with 8.0 innings and helped the Cardinals split the day, losing to Johns Hopkins 10-3 but beating Alfred State 6-2.

"Triola really picked us up in the nightcap," head coach Kris Doorey said. "I can't say enough about his effort and production so far."

GAME ONE: PLATTSBURGH STATE 3, JOHNS HOPKINS 10

Junior Jon Craft (Smithtown, N.Y. / Smithtown West) went 3-for-4 at the plate in game one with one RBI.

Freshman Jack Bermingham (Monroe, N.Y. / Monroe-Woodbury) hit a single to plate senior Joe Deland (Farmingville, N.Y. / Sachem East) and take a one run lead after the first.

Johns Hopkins scored five runs in the second off five hits, plated one in the third, one in the sixth and three in the seventh to take a nine run advantage.

With one out Craft singled to right field to score junior Rocco Cipriano (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. / Dobbs Ferry) while sophomore Keller Kowalowski (Plattsburgh, N.Y. / Beekmantown) scored off a single from sophomore Kentaro Mori (Tokyo, Japan / Joto).

The Cardinals fell short of a rally after Johns Hopkins made a double play to end the top of the eighth and held them off in the ninth to take the seven run win.

Junior Matt Fox (Shoreham, N.Y. / Shoreham-Wading River) pitched 6 innings, gave up 12 hits, seven runs, walked five and struck out six.

"Matt really competed for us against Hopkins," Doorey said. "They are a solid club and he kept us in the game for a while.  We just couldn't get a big hit.  We stranded 10 runners, including six in scoring position."

Senior Jacob Stein (Bay Shore, N.Y./ Bay Shore) pitched one inning, scattered four hits and three runs.

Sophomore Brantley Marion (Plattsburgh, N.Y. / Beekmantown) pitched one inning and stuck out one.

GAME TWO: PLATTSBURGH STATE 6, ALFRED STATE 2

Mori was 3-for-5 at the plate including a triple in the first. He then scored off a single from sophomore Stephen Bryant (Center Moriches, N.Y. / Center Moriches) while Bryant scored off a double by freshman Simon Alvarez (Poughkeepsie, N.Y. / Arlington) to take a 2-0 lead to start.

Alfred State scored in the bottom of the second to cut the Cardinals lead in half.

Plattsburgh State was able to capitalize on two Alfred State errors in the third and scored three runs.

Freshman Anthony Maag (Center Moriches, N.Y. / Center Moriches) stepped up to bat with two on base and hit a homer to score Alvarez and freshman Joel Batista (Bronx, N.Y. / South Bronx).

Deland scored in the seventh off an error by the catcher to take a five run lead for the Cardinals.

Alfred State scored off a double in the bottom of the seventh and after two scoreless innings Plattsburgh State took the four run win.

"Offensively we swung the bats well early in the game," Doorey said.  "Maag's three-run homer was obviously the big hit."

Sophomore Justin Adams (Valhalla, N.Y. / Westlake) pitched 1 inning and had to leave the mound prematurely.

Triola picked up his second win after pitching 8 innings and scattered two hits, two runs, walked four and struck out five

The Cardinals will play NYU, which is coached by Plattsburgh native Doug Kimbler, Friday, March 16, at the New York Yankees major league complex at 9 am.
