Cardinals Claim First SUNYAC Victory With 8-4 Win Over Oneonta

Box Score FORT MYERS, Fla – Junior Matt Fox (Shoreham, N.Y. / Shoreham-Wading River) scattered four hits and allowed one run through eight innings to lead Plattsburgh State to an 8-4 win over Oneonta in a SUNYAC baseball game Saturday at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.

"Matt pitched well for his first time out and really battled out there," Plattsburgh State head coach Kris Doorey said.  "He was in a couple of jams, and showed a lot of heart and really competed."

Game two was suspended due to rain in the top of the first inning and will be resumed tomorrow at 10 a.m. before the regularly scheduled third game at noon.

Plattsburgh jumped on top with single runs in the first, on an RBI single by junior Rocco Cipriano (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. / Dobbs Ferry), and second, when Senior Joe Deland (Farmingville, N.Y. / Sachem East) tripled and scored on junior Jon Craft (Smithtown, N.Y. / Smithtown West) sacrifice fly.

With the score 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth, Plattsburgh exploded for five runs.

Senior Noah Clark (Toms River, N.J. / Toms River East) led off the uprising with an infield single to short.

Cipriano followed with a double down the left field line and freshman Joel Batista (Bronx, N.Y. / South Bronx) followed with a two-run double down the left field line to knock out Oneonta starting pitcher Thomas Bond.

Reliever RJ Lyman walked Deland, then retired two hitters, before walking sophomore Alex Follmer (Plattsburgh, N.Y. / Plattsburgh) to load the bases.

Sophomore Stephen Bryant (Center Moriches, N.Y. / Center Moriches) followed with a bases-clearing double down into the left field corner.

"We had some really good at bats today against a one of the top pitchers in the conference," Doorey added.  "We compete offensively and had some key hits, none bigger than Stephen's double.
