PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey team gave itself some momentum heading into the regular season with a 6-3 victory over Saint Michael's College in its final exhibition game of the year Saturday at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena.
Per NCAA rules for exhibition contests, neither the statistics nor the result count toward the Cardinals' record.
Plattsburgh State's special teams were the difference in the contest, as the Cardinals went 3-for-8 on the power play, while the Purple Knights were 0-for-5 with the extra skater. The Cardinals held a 32-26 margin in shots on goal, including a 17-6 edge in the second period.
The Cardinals now turn their attention toward the regular season, which will begin on Friday, Nov. 2, at 7 p.m. on the road at State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) foe Morrisville State College. Saint Michael's opens up its regular season at home against SUNY Potsdam on Friday, Oct. 26.

Tom Bowe (Homer, Alaska/Aspen Leafs) buried his first goal in a Cardinal uniform 2:17 into the game. Sophomore defenseman
Sam Schultz (Hartland, Wis./Virden Oil Capitals) passed D-to-D to junior defenseman
Philip Middleton (Vail, Colo./Salmon Arm Silverbacks), and Middleton fired a shot through traffic from the left point. Bowe deflected the shot into the goal to give Plattsburgh State an early 1-0 lead.
With 6:57 gone in the first period, senior defenseman
Jakob Engvall (Jönköping, Sweden/Ogden Mustans) gave the Cardinals a 2-0 advantage. Freshman forward
Daniil Ovchinnikov (Saint Petersburg, Russia/Boston Jr. Rangers) handed the puck off to Engvall on the left point, and Engvall ripped a shot that clanged off the bottom of the crossbar and into the goal.
Just 37 seconds later, senior forward
Cam Owens (Wilmington, Mass./Islanders Hockey Club) scored on the power play. Junior defenseman
Andrew Pizzo (Thorold, Ontario/Niagara University) played the puck forward to senior forward
Pat Egan (Rochester, N.Y./Lone Star Brahmas) in the high slot, and Egan fed Owens inside the right face-off circle. Owens then went 5-hole to make it a 3-0 Cardinal lead.
Saint Michael's got on the board with 8:22 gone in the first period, as sophomore forward Ethan Hendrickson scored on an assist from sophomore forward Niall Foster, and the Purple Knights cut the deficit to one on a goal that was scored by sophomore forward Zach Sullivan with 6:19 elapsed in the second period. Freshman defenseman Colin O'Connor and Hendrickson each were credited with assists on Sullivan's goal.
Sophomore forward
Rich McCartney (Hershey, Pa./Philadelphia Revolution) scored the game-winner 12:32 into the second period. Owens and junior defenseman
Charles Barber (Queensbury, N.Y./New York Bobcats) helped spring McCartney forward on an odd-man rush, and McCartney fired a shot from the low slot that went under the goalie's pads.
McCartney added another goal to his ledger with 2:58 left in the second, scoring on a 5-on-3 power play. Junior defenseman
Antoine Fournier-Gosselin (Saint-Lazare, Quebec/Cégep de Saint-Laurent) passed D-to-D to sophomore forward
Liam Lawson (Vancouver, British Columbia/Power River Paper Kings), and Lawson dropped the puck off to McCartney inside the left face-off circle. McCartney skated up into the high slot and went top shelf glove side to put Plattsburgh State up, 5-2.
Senior forward
Ross Sloan (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Blades) added even more insurance on the power play 3:36 into the third period. Freshman forward
Christian DiFelice (Thorold, Ontario/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) played the puck to Middleton on the point, and Middleton blasted a shot that was saved. Sloan then quickly fired the rebound into the back of the net from the low slot.
Sophomore forward Paul McAuliffe scored for Saint Michael's midway through the third period to close out scoring, using assists from Hendrickson and sophomore defenseman Sel Narby.
Plattsburgh State utilized three goalies in the win, with junior goaltender
Keller Kowalowski (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown) and sophomore goaltender
Jimmy Poreda (Tonawanda, N.Y./Connecticut Jr. Rangers) each making nine saves. Saint Michael's used three goalies in the loss, with freshman goaltender Hugo Turcotte turning aside 17 shots in 32:26 of action.
