Baseball Plates Three Runs in 13-Inning Win over Olivet

Box Score AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Plattsburgh State baseball team pushed across three runs in the top of the 13th inning to break a 7-7 tie and eventually give the Cardinals a 10-7 win against Olivet College in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational at Lake Myrtle Park on Thursday. The Cardinals move to 3-4 on the season, while the Comets drop to 1-9.

In what was Plattsburgh State's longest game since a 13-inning affair on March 16, 2012, senior T.J. Montalbano (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills West/Jefferson CC) went 4-for-7 with two runs scored and an RBI. Freshman Alex Follmer (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) had three hits, classmate Stephen Bryant (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) doubled as part of a two-hit day and junior Noah Clark (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East/Caldwell) went 2-for-5 with a solo home run and three runs scored. Freshman Kentaro Mori (Tokyo, Japan/Joto) provided two hits and classmate Alec Fauvell (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) hurled two relief innings for his first career win. Sophomore Matt Fox (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) tossed a scoreless 13th frame for the save.

Olivet dropped in 14 hits and five Comets contributed multi-hit outings. Sophomore Travis Petts collected four hits, while junior Austin Holliday went 3-for-7 with a double. Senior Austin Cleaver reached base four times on two walks, one double and one single and classmate Brady Johnson took the loss in relief.

Knotted at 7-7 through 12 innings, the Cardinals used station-to-station play and small ball to plate three runs. Montalbano and Clark both singled to start the inning and Mori's fielder's choice bunt loaded the bases with no outs. Follmer's chopper to the shortstop was bobbled and allowed Montalbano to score. Freshman pinch hitter James Hartunian (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) came up with a sacrifice fly and sophomore Jon Craft (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) put down a two-strike suicide squeeze for Plattsburgh State's third run of the inning. Fox entered in the bottom half and delivered a shutout frame to seal the win.

The Cardinals had jumped out to a 5-0 lead before the Comets chipped back with one run in the fifth and three in the sixth inning. Plattsburgh State and Olivet then went into the ninth tied, 6-6. Cardinal sophomore Patrick Bryant (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches/Hofstra) deposited a two-out, pinch-hit RBI single for the go-ahead run but Olivet equalized on a two-out base hit before the potential game-winning run was cut down on an outfield relay to home.

As the team has done since 2012, Plattsburgh State is slated to play three State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) games while in Florida. The Cardinals oppose the College at Brockport on Friday for a doubleheader in Auburndale, beginning at 1:15 p.m. Game one is a nine-inning contest while game two is a seven-inning contest.
