Knotted at 7-7 through 12 innings, the Cardinals used station-to-station play and small ball to plate three runs. Montalbano and Clark both singled to start the inning and Mori's fielder's choice bunt loaded the bases with no outs. Follmer's chopper to the shortstop was bobbled and allowed Montalbano to score. Freshman pinch hitter
James Hartunian (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) came up with a sacrifice fly and sophomore
Jon Craft (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) put down a two-strike suicide squeeze for Plattsburgh State's third run of the inning. Fox entered in the bottom half and delivered a shutout frame to seal the win.
The Cardinals had jumped out to a 5-0 lead before the Comets chipped back with one run in the fifth and three in the sixth inning. Plattsburgh State and Olivet then went into the ninth tied, 6-6. Cardinal sophomore
Patrick Bryant (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches/Hofstra) deposited a two-out, pinch-hit RBI single for the go-ahead run but Olivet equalized on a two-out base hit before the potential game-winning run was cut down on an outfield relay to home.
As the team has done since 2012, Plattsburgh State is slated to play three State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) games while in Florida. The Cardinals oppose the College at Brockport on Friday for a doubleheader in Auburndale, beginning at 1:15 p.m. Game one is a nine-inning contest while game two is a seven-inning contest.
