Baseball Swept by No. 9 Oswego State in Doubleheader, First Home Games of Season

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State baseball team returned to action for the first time in two weeks on Saturday by hosting No. 9 Oswego State in its first games at Chip Cummings Field in the 2016 season, and fell by scores of 12-1 and 3-0 to the upstart Lakers.

The Cardinals' record drops to 3-19 and 1-7 in league tilts while Oswego State improves to 19-3 overall and 6-2 in the SUNYAC.

GAME ONE: Oswego State 12, Plattsburgh State 1 (9 inn.)
The Lakers, who this week made their first-ever appearance in the top 10 of the NCBWA/D3Baseball.com poll, wasted no time in putting runs up on the board as they scored four times in the top of the first off  of  the Cardinals' starting pitcher Matt Fox.

Plattsburgh State loaded the bases in its home first, but couldn't come through with a two-out base hit.

Fox would settle down and allow just three hits over the next three innings, giving up a pair unearned runs in both the third and fourth innings.

Oswego State put together its second big inning of the contest in the sixth, scoring four more runs to separate themselves from the Cardinals and go up 10-0. Senior Ross Levinson relieved Fox to retire the third out of the inning.

The Lakers added a run in both the seventh and ninth innings, and failed to score a run in only three frames.

A pair of balks by Matt Zakala plated a run for Plattsburgh State in the bottom of the ninth, but that would be all the home team would get.

Oswego State's Tim Cronin earned the win, allowing just three hits over six innings of work. After entering the game with two runners on base and getting out of a the jam, Levinson pitched the final three innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on three hits while striking out two.

GAME TWO: Oswego State 3, Plattsburgh State 0 (7 inn.)
Senior Scott Orr pitched his best game so far in 2016 in the backend of the twin bill, but it wasn't enough as the Cardinals were shut down by Oswego State's Robert Donnelly.

Donnelly, in going the distance, allowed just three hits and walked none while striking out eight.

John Barnes delivered a two-out triple in the second to give the Lakers a 1-0 lead. The visitors would then add another run in the third despite not hitting the ball out of the infield. Wes Randall and Eric Hamilton each posted infield singles, sandwiched by Brian Hamilton's hit-by-pitch. Myles Kutscher grounded out to short, picking up an RBI as Randall scored on the play.

Sophomore Jack Tolosky accumulated two of the three Cardinal hits in game two, although he was picked off of first base after starting the bottom of the fourth with a single.

Orr , who last time out allowed a career-high eight walks at New Paltz, bounced back by issuing zero free passes on Saturday. The Baldwinsville, N.Y., native pitched a complete game, giving up six hits while striking out four.

The Cardinals and Lakers will conclude their three-game set at Chip Cummings Field on Sunday with a single, nine-inning contest that is scheduled to begin at noon.
