PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Despite posting a single-inning, season-high six runs in the third inning, the Plattsburgh State baseball team was unable to hold a lead as the Cardinals fell to SUNYAC foe and No. 9 ranked Oswego State, 16-6 in the finale of a three-game set Sunday afternoon at Chip Cummings Field.
The Cardinals' record drops to 3-20 overall and 1-8 in the SUNYAC while Oswego State moves to 20-3 and 7-2 in conference tilts.
Senior lefty
Andrew Kramer got the start for Plattsburgh State, and pitched well over the first three innings, allowing just one run on one hit. The Clifton Park, N.Y., native's only blunder in that stretch came in the form of a failed pickoff attempt. After Myles Kutscher singled to start the second, Kramer attempted a pick-off but fired the ball down the right field line, allowing Kutscher to score all the way from first base.
Plattsburgh State stuck to small ball in its home third, and it paid off in a big way. With runners on first and second and one out,
Jon Craft and
T.J. Montalbano each laid down back-to-back bunt singles, with Montalbano's plating the first Cardinal run.
Billy Rombauts would then be hit by a pitch with the bases load, picking up an RBI and giving Plattsburgh State a 2-1 lead. Junior
Trevor Markey followed with a line drive single to left, scoring one run to make it 3-1.
Thanks to two consecutive errors by Oswego State, the Cardinals increased their lead to 5-1, before sophomore
Jack Tolosky singled up the middle to drive in
Ray Flynn and cap the six-run third.
The Cardinals' 6-1 lead was short-lived though as the Lakers scored three times in the top of the fourth. After setting up runners on second and third with one out, Zach Kollar singled up the middle to cut his team's deficit to 6-2. With the bases loaded later in the inning, Matt Capobianco drove in a pair with a hard-hit single to right field. Plattsburgh State would maintain its lead, however, as Kramer induced a 4-3 groundball double play to escape the inning.
Kramer would be finished after 75 pitches when he walked the first batter of the fifth inning. Just as was the case on Saturday, senior
Ross Levinson was the first Cardinal pitcher to enter from the bullpen.
The Lakers played some small ball of their own when Kutscher bunted for a hit with two men on, setting up bases loaded and no outs and the Cardinals clinging to a two-run lead. Plattsburgh State would force a runner out at home for the first out of the inning, but John Barnes delivered a clean single to left field to tie the game at 6-6. Now with two outs, Kollar shot a line drive up the middle to score Barnes and re-give Oswego State the lead at 7-6.
The game remained 7-6 until a nine-run Laker seventh put the game out of reach. In that frame, which saw 13 Oswego State players come to bat, the visitors slugged nine hits, including six of the extra-base variety.
Kollar went 4-for-5 in collecting five RBIs for the Lakers, while Barnes drove in three.
T.J. Montalbano finished with two hits and a run batted in for the Cardinals.
Plattsburgh State will remain at home to face North Country non-conference rival St. Lawrence on Tuesday afternoon in a single, nine-inning contest. The game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
