Box Score 2 MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Plattsburgh State baseball team must have sent its bats home one day early as the team failed to score a run in either loss on Saturday at the Ripken Experience.
The Cardinals lost the opener 11-0 to Johnson & Wales. Starting pitcher
Eric Rock didn't make it out of the first inning, as he walked four of the first six batters.
Ray Flynn and
Trevor Markey each had two hits for Plattsburgh.
In the team's second game against Lehman, both squads battled to a scoreless tie until the bottom of the eighth. The Lightning's Steve Cuello led off the inning with a single to center and came around to score on a double to deep center by Chris Lopez. The Cardinals couldn't get anything going in the top of the ninth, and dropped a 1-0 decision for the second time in three days.
Andrew Kramer suffered the loss, scattering nine hits over eight innings with six strikeouts.
Offensively, the Cardinals only hits were infield singles by
T.J. Montalbano and Flynn.
The Cardinals finish the Myrtle Beach trip with a 1-4 record and stand at 1-6 overall.
"The trip was definitely a learning experience for our newcomers," Plattsburgh State head baseball coach
Kris Doorey said. "We had four strong outings from our starting pitchers, but were only able to win one game."
"When the pitchers do their job, we have to do a better job offensively," Doorey continued. "We did not do a good enough job of making in-game adjustments. That is something we will continue to work on before we get into SUNYAC play."
After heading back up to the North Country, Plattsburgh State will be going deeper down south next weekend. The Cardinals will head to Central Florida to compete in the annual RussMatt Invitational. Plattsburgh State is scheduled to play 10 games while there during the school's spring break. Its first matchup is a doubleheader against Vassar College scheduled to begin at 2:45 p.m. on Sunday, March 13.
