PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey team carried its momentum from Friday night's overtime win over Oswego right through Saturday night, trouncing SUNY Cortland 6-1.
The Red Dragons would hang tough with the Cardinals throughout the first period as each team entered the intermission with one goal.
Plattsburgh State would take a 1-0 lead on defenseman
Ryan Chiasson's first career goal. The Henderson, Nev., native sent a changeup towards the net that fluttered through traffic and over the glove of SUNY Cortland goalie Drew Weigman.
SUNY Cortland would strike the equalizer less than two minutes later when the team's point and goal leader, Darren McCormick found the back of the net for his 11
th of the season.
The second period would be the difference in the game as the Cardinals would net four unanswered goals in the middle frame.
Pat Egan would get his 11
th of the year sending a wrister by Weigman who made the initial save on
Nick Belger to make it 2-1.
Luke Baleshta and
Connor Gorman would play a little give and go, setting up Baleshta in the slot for a slick wrist shot past the glove of Weigman for a 3-1 advantage.
Senior,
Michael Radisa would be the beneficiary of a bad SUNY Cortland turnover in its defensive zone that set up the Caledon, Ontario native for a clapper in the slot that beat Weigman glove side.
All three goals were all tallied within a five minute span.
After missing the last handful of games, Belger would return to the scoring column with a pretty toe drag around a sliding Cortland defender and then beating Weigman glove side, giving the Cardinals a 5-1 lead.
The third period would go quiet through the first 19:59 untll freshman defender
Santino Ragone sent a slap shot by new Cortland goaltender Kollyn Jones for his first career goal and send the Cardinals home with a 6-1 victory.
Plattsburgh State goaltender
Brady Rouleau finished the night with 27 saves on 28 shots while Weigman finished with 30 saves through two and Jones finished with 13 in the third.
Third-ranked Plattsburgh State improves to 18-3-1 (11-1-1 SUNYAC) while SUNY Cortland falls to 7-10-4 (1-8-3 SUNYAC).
Next, the Cardinals will hit the road to travel to Potsdam for a North Country rivalry between two top teams in the SUNYAC. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Saturday, February 13.
