Gorman Sinks Lakers in OT Thriller Against Oswego, 4-3

Connor Gorman tallied two goals Friday night including the game-winner against Oswego in a 4-3 OT Cardinal win.
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey team took nearly all 65 minutes Friday night against Oswego State, as senior Connor Gorman scored with two seconds left in overtime to boost the Cardinals to a 4-3 victory over the Lakers.

The Cardinals would take a 1-0 lead in the opening five minutes of the game as Kyle Hall scored a rebound goal off an Aryton Valente shot.

However, Oswego State would respond less than 30 seconds later when junior Shawn Hulshof sniped one corner bar and in.

Gorman would get his first of the night 14:52 into the first period with a nifty on ice deflection to beat Oswego State goaltender Matt Zawadzki and regain the Cardinal lead, 2-1.

The Lakers would tally the only goal of the second period to tie the game back up at 2-2. Mitchell Herlihey was the recipient of a bad Cardinal turnover that sprung a 3-on-1 Laker rush, resulting in the Oswego State goal.

Oswego State would come full circle to claim a 3-2 lead less than two minutes into the third period. Laker, Chris Waterstreet collected a rebound off of Plattsburgh State goalie Spencer Finney smacking one past the senior for the goal.

After several power plays and outshooting the Lakers 18-7 in the final period, the Cardinals would finally strike the equalizer with 2:07 left in the third period, converting on a 4-on-4 goal. Luke Baleshta would win the face off in the offensive zone back to Anthony Calabrese for a quick slap shot that beat Zawadzki. It was Calabrese's first goal of the 2015-16 season.

For the second-straight time, the Cardinals and Lakers would battle it out in overtime and again for the second-straight time it was the Cardinals that would come out on top.

Each team would draw a penalty in the overtime period but neither was able to light the lamp on its man advantage.

It would come down to the waning seconds of the game. After returning to the neutral zone to cancel an offsides with less than 10 seconds remaining, Gorman would rush into the Laker zone and pick pocket an Oswego State defender deep in the right side circle. The Shrewsbury, Mass., native wouldn't miss a stride after taking the puck ripping a shot far side by the blocker of Zawadzki for the 4-3 game-winner.

Finney would finish with 27 saves on the night while Zawadzki made 38.

Plattsburgh State went 0-for-5 on the power play, taking 15 shots on the advantage while Oswego State went 0-for-3 with three shots.

Gorman has now scored in three consecutive games against Oswego State inclduing two game-winners.

The third-ranked Cardinals remain on top of the SUNYAC standings at 10-1-1 and improve to 17-3-1 overall. The Lakers scuffle to 10-8-2 and 7-5-1 in the conference.

Plattsburgh State will remain home to face SUNY Cortland tomorrow night at 7 p.m. in another SUNYAC matchup.
