SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Plattsburgh State women's basketball team kicked off the New Year in the Hampton Inn West Springfield/Naismith Classic against 2015 Div. III National semifinalist Tufts on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals struggled in their first game back from the holiday season, falling to the Jumbos, 67-36.
The highlight of the game was senior forward
Devona Paul, who led Plattsburgh State with an 11 point, 10 rebound double-double. In addition Paul netted her 1,000
th career point in the process.
The Blauvelt, N.Y., native has spent all four years playing in Cardinal red and has many memorable performances along the way. Most recently, Paul dropped a school record 49 points against St. Lawrence at home on Dec. 1. She also played a key role in helping the Cardinals win their first SUNYAC championship during the 2013-14 season.
Not to be overshadowed, forward
Jessica Dolan added six points and four rebounds, while the newest acquisition to the squad,
Monique Jones, tallied seven points in her Plattsburgh State debut.
The offense couldn't find its groove as the Cardinals shot 26.7-percent (12-for-45) from the floor and 12.5-percent (1-for-8) from beyond the arc.
The Jumbos were able to capitalize on Cardinal turnovers and outscored Plattsburgh State 26-6 in points off of turnovers.
Emma Roberson paced the Jumbos with 14 points and 8 boards, while Maura Folliard chipped in with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Plattsburgh State will face Wesleyan in day two of the Hampton Inn West Springfield/Naismith Classic on Sunday at 1 p.m. on the campus of Springfield College.
