PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Cardinal men's soccer team (6-0) was firing on all cylinders Sunday in a 7-1 win over the Mount St. Mary Knights (1-4-1). The win solidified Plattsburgh as the 2015 Best-Western Ground Round Cardinal Classic Champions.
Nicholas Laurent got the Cardinals on the board first when
Alexis Archilla was awarded a penalty kick that Knights goalie Austin Peluso was able save. Laurent found the loose ball and was able to put the rebound past Peluso. Laurent scored again off a rebound three minutes later to make it a 2-0 game.
Alexis Archilla netted two of his team-high five goals on Sunday.
Chris Bowden scored his third of the year on a cross from
Josh Barriere.
Terrence Spence and
Jon Cabeca each found the back of the net as well for the Cardinals in the decisive victory.
Michael Ennis scored the lone goal for Mount St. Mary.
All-Tournament Team Honors were awarded to Andrew Clothier of Colby-Sawyer College, Michael Ennis and Eric Hayes of Mount St. Mary, and
Alexis Archilla and
Ethan Votraw of Plattsburgh State.
Plattsburgh's
Nicholas Laurent was awarded the offensive MVP, while teammate
Nick Economou earned defensive MVP.
The Cardinals next match will be on Wednesday against the Norwich Cadets at 4 p.m. at the Field House Compex.
