Cardinals Explode for Eight Goals in Win over Colby-Sawyer

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's soccer team (5-0) rolled to an impressive 8-1 victory over the Colby-Sawyer Chargers (1-3) on Saturday.

After a quick Chargers goal by Zach Elmore seven minutes in, the Cardinals were able to score three goals in the next five minutes to diminish whatever momentum Colby-Sawyer may have had.

Nicholas Laurent scored 12 seconds after Elmore to even the game at one. Ethan Votraw followed with two goals and Alexis Archilla scored on a penalty kick that had the Cardinals on top 4-1 at the half.

Not to be overshadowed by the offense, the Plattsburgh defense played solid on Saturday. Jah-Heem Lawitz made an impressive save when goalie Mitchell Jordon came out to clear the ball, which deflected off the Charger offense and headed straight for the Cardinal net. Lawitz was able to track it down and make a goal line slide to clear what would have been the second goal of the game for Colby-Sawyer.

Lawitz was productive on the offensive end as well by starting the second half with a goal early to continue the Cardinal dominance. Josh Barriere and Alex Price each scored their first goal in a Cardinal uniform while Chris Bowden netted his second of the season to round out the Plattsburgh scoring.

The Cardinals will face the Mount St. Mary Knights in the championship game of the 2015 Best-Western Ground Round Cardinal Classic on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. The Knights defeated the Nazareth Golden Flyers 2-0 on Saturday to advance to the title game.
