POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's hockey team finished its ECAC West conference games with a midweek trip to SUNY Potsdam, defeating the Bears Wednesday night 7-1.
Senior, Morgan MacInnis got the Cardinals on the board quickly tallying her fourth goal of the season 68 seconds into the game.
MacInnis collected the puck after SUNY Potsdam goalie Abby Tardelli tried to pass it out but it deflected off a Bear defender to MacInnis who fired a shot on a relatively open net.
The rest of the first period would remain quite as play each team would go back and forth looking for the next goal.
The Cardinals would be at it again this time striking only 40 seconds into the second period.
Bridget Balisy would deflect a Shannon Stewart shot through the five-hole of Tardelli for her 15 goal of the season making it 2-0 Cardinals.
Katelyn Turk would make it 3-0 when Sheeran would draw Tardelli and the Bears defense to the left-side before sending a pass over to the sophomore who would tap it into an bare net.
The Cardinals would make it 4-0 14:48 into the second period off of an offensive faceoff win.
Giovanna Sense would win the draw before getting it back on a pass from freshman Kayla Meneghin. Sense would then beat Tardelli for her 11 tally of the season.
The Bears would get on the board just two minutes after the Sense tally to stop the Cardinals streak of four unanswered goals.
Last year's ECAC West Rookie of the Year Jordan Ott found herself on a breakaway beating Cardinals goaltender Camille Leonard up top to make it 4-1 Plattsburgh State at the end of two periods.
Ott's goal right before the end of the second period ended a 323:26 shutout streak Plattsburgh State had over SUNY Potsdam as the Cardinals blanked the Bears four consecutive games prior to Wednesday.
After missing the past three games Melissa Sheeran returned Wednesday scoring a pretty goal in the third period to make it 5-1 Cardinals.
Sheeran evaded a Bears defender by bring the puck to her backhand before deking back to her front and ripping a shot top-shelf blocker side on Tardelli.
Olivia Fox would keep her hot-streak going adding her third goal in five games. Erin Brand took a shot that went to the end boards behind the Bears net. The puck was jarred free to Fox who backhanded one on net that was deflected off a Bears defender and over Tardelli.
Sheeran would find the back of the net for her second of the night as she played give and go with Meneghin and then making a move around Tardelli to beat the Bears goaltender with 44 seconds left in the game to give Plattsburgh State a 7-1 victory.
Cardinals goalie Leonard finished the night stopping 23 of 24 shots while her opponent Tardelli collected 41 saves in the losing effort.
With the win Plattsburgh State finished the ECAC West in second place with 32 points on a 16-2-0 record and move 20-2-2 on the year.
The No. 2 Cardinals will finish up its regular season on the road Saturday in a showdown against No. 3 Middlebury on Saturday at 3 p.m. in Kenyon Arena.
