PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey team returned to the Stafford Ice Arena for the first time since its 2014-15 National Championship victory, picking up right where they left off defeating Neumann 8-0.
The Cardinals would strike for two in the opening period both from sophomore
Melissa Sheeran.
Sheeran first scored on wrister from the slot beating Neumann goalie Justina Mayr glove high. Her second goal she would spring free from the corner boards and race back towards the crease dekeing the goal before wrapping it around the pads of Mayr.
In the second period, Plattsburgh State would tally four goals.
Olivia Fox would make it 3-0 after collecting a rebound in front of the net from an initial
Andrea Ziesmann shot.
Sheeran would later net her hat-trick goal on a 5-3 power play to give the Cardinals a 4-0 advantage. Moments later, linemate,
Kayla Meneghin would convert the 5-4 power play to make it 5-0.
Senese would score her second the season after she was positioned on top of the crease tap in a goal from a Meneghin shot that Mayr couldn't complete handle.
In the final period, Plattsburgh State would tally two more goals both from Cardinals scoring their first collegiate goals.
Defenseman
Erin Brand transferred in last season netting her first goal on a 4-4 situation. After tick-tac-toe passing from
Caitlin Gilligan and Sheeran freed up Brand on the top of the slot she would be able to deliver a wrist shot beating new Neumann goalie Julia Fair.
Freshman, Courtney Moriatry would cap the scoring when she spun around in the slot slipping her backhand shot through the legs of Fair.
Camille Leonard posted her second-consecutive shutout making 14 saves in the process. Mayr finished the day with 39 saves in two periods while Fair corralled 16 saves in the final stanza.
With the win the top ranked Cardinals improve to 3-0-0 and 1-0-0 in the Eastern College Athletic Conference West (ECACW). Neumann falls to 0-3-0 and 0-1-0 in the ECACW
The Cardinals and Knights will meet again at the Stafford Ice Arena Sunday at 2 p.m. to wrap up their weekend double header.
